Hever Castle question

It seems like forever but I am finally planning another trip to the UK, this time with my sister and nephew in Oct 2021. My sister really wants to visit Hever Castle but it seems a bit difficult to access without a car. Questions:

1. Is there easy taxi access from the train station? The website gives a phone number for a taxi service but I'm wondering if anyone has done this.
2. Is there a tour that would either leave from London or the train station that would not charge an arm and a leg? I realize a private tour will be expensive but the only one I found is nuts.

Any input will be appreciated.

Not difficult at all - take the train from London to Edenbridge then a taxi less than 3 miles to the Castle entrance. Could be walked on a nice day. Taxis may or may not be waiting at the station but easy to pre-book.

Trains to Edenbridge leave from Victoria or London Bridge.

Great advice, JJ, but the station that LCBonti needs is Edenbridge Town which is on the Victoria/london Bridge to Uckfield Line. Edenbridge [top] station is on the Reading to Redhill line. This is important when it comes to booking a taxi to go to Hever.

We visited it without a car a few years ago. I don't recall which train station but the walk seemed less than 3 miles. We walked there along the road (no sidewalk but light traffic and didn't feel dangerous). We walked back to the train via a path through some woods and past a few farms. It was lovely.

Having thought about this again, if you fancy the walk, the Edenbridge town station would be the best bet. However if you definitely want a taxi, the better place to get one may well be Oxted, which also has twice as many trains as Edenbridge Town, as the line splits there, one going to Uckfield, and the other to East Grinstead.

As for footpaths, I found this useful site which reminded me that there is actually a station at Hever itself - which shows how much attention I used to pay when I was sitting on the train at Oxted. Hever is the next stop after Edenbridge town. Trains go hourly from London Bridge. If Victoria is more convenient your can change at East Croydon.

Thanks annhig -- good catch. I thought I had included 'Town' but that what happens when I try to multi task . . .

Yes, Edenbridge Town.

Hever station is totally unstaffed but is definitely closer to the castle. Maybe a 20-25 minute walk to the castle entrance. I'd play it by ear on the day -- if its a lovely day you could get off at Hever and walk, if it is dreary/wet, get off at Edenbridge Town and take a taxi.

Thank so much for this information. After the pandemic and a true annus horribilis for me, I am finding great joy in planning this trip but also find myself a bit apprehensive. Good to hear from familiar names.
