I need some advice on an itinerary for driving, with a bit of walking, through the Spanish Pyrenees. My husband and I have three nights to spend in the Pyrenees on our way from Cadaques to San Sebastian at the very end of April/beginning of May. As we live in flat, flat, flat Miami Beach, we would like to immerse ourselves in pretty, dramatic mountain towns during this time. We’d like to do a bit of hiking/walking, but we’re not sure we’ve left ourselves enough time to do any walking and still get from Cadaques to San Sebastian in three days/nights.

As we’d like to drive a really magnificent (sounding) road like the Col de la Creueta, we thought we might start out on the N260, go onto the Col and rejoin the N260 in La Molina, and end up the first day in somewhere near Lilivia/Puigcerda. Are those towns really in the middle of the mountains? Would you suggest pushing on farther the first night, maybe to La Seu d’Urgell (is this really mountainous?).

Then we thought we’d go on to Ainsa for two nights, which sounds like a lovely mountain town near Torla and find a reasonable hike in that area. Or we could spend one night in Ainsa and one in Torla, or two in Torla! If anyone has an under-10 mile, not-too-steep hike to recommend, I’d appreciate it. We are in our 60s and walk and bike almost everywhere in our town, but we are not used to hills....

I was very glad to spend some time in Taüll en route from San Sebastian to Cadaques; I just took a short walk, but think you would find some hiking options that might suit, as the towns in the Vall de Boí -- towns with magnificent Romanesque churches / remains thereof -- are all connected by paths. Head for the Tena Valley for a couple of days of spectacular beauty in the Aragon Pyrenees.

I would also recommend Taüll except that hiking may be limited because of possible snow conditions. But this may be true anywhere in the high Pyrenees.
