Hi. we are driving North after exploring the Cotswolds area. We want to see the Peak District and see Chatsworth, then continue to York to see the Bronte's Museum, continue to the Lake District.

I am not sure what area to select to stay after the Costwolds. Should I stay one night at the Peak DISTRICT and then continue? Any suggestions on this regard? Should I select a "base"? but Where?
We will be in that area the second week of September. Then we will continue North up to Inverness, and come back down via Edinburgh.

We have a rental car and it is two of us.

Be sure to hit Fountains Abbey if heading to Peak District - awesome sight - easy to do by car.

After Lake District:

Hadrian's Wall could be on way to Scotland but you don't say how much time you have.

If wanting to see Bronte Museum it's not in York but in Haworth not far from Leeds - Haworth is a small village on the edge of the moors with the parsonage where Brontes' pop was local preacher. Now a museum:

You could drive there from Cotswolds - stop by there and then go via Fountains Abbey perhaps staying somewhere near there.

I stayed in Harrogate - a pleasant spa town - nice base for the Bronte stuff and Fountains Abbey - very very pleasant town - maybe do a day trip to the Yorkshire Dales proper from Harrogate:

Thank you - others on Fodors are much more versed in the Peak District and motoring routes than I - keep topping your thread as once it sinks out of sight few will see it.

Take a look at Bakewell for your time in the Peak district. I stayed there for 3 days a few years ago. It's a small town with plenty of restaurants. It close to Chatsworth house (the main reason for my visit) but also Haddon Hall and Thornbridge Hall.

Yes, Bakewell is a great village to stay in. I wanted to recommend the B&B, but I think the ownership has changed hands. I'd also stayed at the Hassop Hall Hotel, which is a lovely place.

I really hope you visit Haddon Hall. It is an extraordinary experience.

Also, if you have the time, you might visit Eyam, the plaque village, and be sure to walk to the boundary stone. The experience is really moving if you study a bit of the history, and there is a museum to go to, which is where I would start.

On the way to Chatsworth, someone mentioned how much they liked Renishaw Hall, nearby. I've not been yet, but the gardens and grounds certainly look gorgeous.

From Chatsworth, I'd hop back on the motorway and (with maybe a stop for the West Yorkshire Sculpture park which is world class) burn up towards Howarth (famous destitute/sickness ridden village where the Brontes were taken to grow-up), getting here from the south is real pain as you have to hack through the urban mess that is Leeds or Bradford (do able between 10 am and 3pm but otherwise a right faff).

If you decide to do it later (or earlier) I would go up to the Boston Spa turn off the A1M, head west towards Otley and keep going till you hit H.

Leaving there via Fountains look like a bit of a mess and it is a bit wiggly but welcome to some of the most beautiful land in the north. I tend to do back roads keeping well West of Harrogate, but if you don't have time for Fountains (one of the best sites in the county), then set GPS to Knaresborough and get back onto the A1M that way.

BTW Howarth is home to the most famously unpleasant Yorkshire man/carpark owner so watch yourselves.

Check in M69 is fully open, they are closing it for bits at a time at the moment which might wreck your plans
