Is the SOM tour worth it? We've never seen the movie. I'm not sure I care or will have time to watch it. Hubby thinks we should skip it and just go see whatever we wish to see (Mirabell Gardens sound lovely). However, Rick Steves seems to speak highly of it.
Thoughts?

SOM is my favorite movie. I did the tour while in Salzburg. That being said, I would not take the tour if you have not seen the movie or have no interest in seeing the movie. Most of the stops take you to places where the movie was filmed. There is plenty to visit in Salzburg. The Mirabell gardens are lovely!
Please use Rick Steve's suggestions as a starting point. Heck, I used to book all the hotels he suggested and carried his book when I traveled. I now use his books as a starting point to do research. Just because Rick likes it, doesn't mean it is something that you would like. Do your research at Fodor's and other websites.
Have fun in Austria!

There is a lot more in Salzburg than just this movie thing. The castle, the cathedral and other churches, the whole old town, Mozart house, Hellbrunn palace etcetera etcetera - IMHO more worthwhile than running after the setting of a movie that you haven't even seen. Rick Steves is no measure...

As I recall the city closed, or at least moved, that gazebo because some visitor decided she wanted to re-enact the gazebo scene and in doing so fell and broke her leg!
The Schloss Leopoldskron which was used for some of the film's exteriors has apparently passed into private hands (I'm not sure of the Salzburg Seminar still uses the property as it used to).
I have seen the movie, more than once, but I have never felt the inclination to take the tour for whatever reason.
