Sydney - Melbourne 2 night / 3 day Road Trip

We are 4 male friends. We will be travelling from Sydney to Melbourne by road. But we have only 2 nights and 3 days to travel. We have to be in Melbourne on 3rd day by noon. Please suggest route and places to stay and things to do on this route.

The quickest route is the Hume Highway from Sydney to Melbourne - about 900 km. I'd suggest staying overnight in Canberra and having a look around our capital city. Another option if you like wine and good food is to divert from the highway and visit Bright in northern Victoria.

The coastal route is very pretty, but a bit longer. Plenty of places to stay. Easily doable in your time frame.

When are you travelling? The coastal route will be booked out during Christmas new year.

I would ask when you are traveling too. I don't know if you are nature lovers because in the spring there is a huge humpback whales migration. We stayed in Eden which is about halfway between Syd. and Mel. We stayed at the Eagle Heights Holiday Units. We took an ocean view which was quite nice and an easy drive down to the beach. They may have units with more than one bedroom which I guess would be good for 4 guys! I thought it was reasonably priced but we were there just a month ago in the spring and it may cost more during beach weather.

Definitely do the coastal route since you have the time. We did it on our honeymoon in Jan 1982. I remember diverting here and there to some lovely beaches.

We enjoyed doing the coastal route a couple of months ago, coming back from Sydney to Melbourne. Enjoyed the drive more on the coastal route back more than the Hume highway going up. We went via Fitzroy Falls and Kangaroo Valley, working down to Hyams beach and then Merimbula (whale watching). After that, we focused more on driving than sightseeing, but plenty of places along the Princes Hwy for dinner from Bairnsdale and onward.
