We are planning a road trip (husband, myself and 14 yr old son) from Houston, TX to Durango, CO this summer. Any tips, advice, routes would be greatly appreciated!!

I never looked at the website, spirobulldog. Wow, $459 a person is really pricey. Looks nice but that is a chunk of change.

We did a zipline in Gatlinburg last weekend that was really good for $89. 459 is a bit hard to justify, but really is good.

From NE Texas, we like to get to Durango by going through northern New Mexico---Taos, Tierra Amarilla, Chama, Pagosa Springs, Durango. Really nice drive over a pass. Much prettier drive than through eastern Colorado. You will probably come up through Santa Fe.

The Durango Silverton train is amazing but I recommend riding the bus back. It's a very long day both ways on the train.

Durango has some kayaking outfitters.

I don't know how long your stay is but the loop drive through Silverton, Ouray, Ridgeway, Telluride and back down to Durango is awesome.

Jeeping out of Ouray is a must if you have time to stay in that area a night.

True Grit--the original was filmed in and around Ridgway. The square still looks almost the same as in the movie.

BUT, whatever you do, do not eat at the True Grit Cafe in Ridgway. It has gone downhill.

IF you decide to go off- roading / jeeping please do not attempt to drive off road yourself if you are driving a jeep. Go with a professional jeep touring company who know the roads and how to drive safely.
