Hi all,

We will be driving from San Diego to Lake Tahoe with 2 kids, 5 and 7 years old, this summer. We will have a week in Tahoe.

I am looking for places to see and/or stay on the way. We are open to camping and have no time frame. Well, we have a week booked in Tahoe but can give ourselves as much time up or back as we need.

I have found a lot of ideas, but they also depend on the route which I haven't decided on either....so if you have a strong opinion on that, I'd like to hear it.

I'd go 395 one way (be sure to visit Bodie) and hwy 49 the other (gold rush towns).

The hwy 49 route will mean you need to traverse the lower Central Valley by I-5 or 99 but only as far as Fresno or Merced -- the rest would be VERY scenic.

OR -- if you really have sufficient time you can head up the coast and then cut across from the Monterey area to Merced and then up 49.

Between Hwy 49 and Tahoe you can go via hwy 50, I-80 or hwy 88.

Oh yes -- Michael is right. DEFINITELY visit Columbia. The kids will love it.
