From Tahoe to Fresno - 50 to 49?

We will be taking the 395 up to Tahoe from San Diego, but were thinking about the 50 to 49 into Fresno, then hightailing it home from there. Anyone have a take on that route? It definitely looks slow, but we are more interested in the scenery and not taking the same route back home.

I made my first trip along C-49 in many years a couple of weeks ago and it is superb. It is two lane road and is very well maintained. The route varies from gnetly rolling hills to steep climbs and descents but is easily drivable in a passenger car and with average driving skill. I usually drive with a lead foot but I found myself just ambling along, taking in the sights and experiences of gold country.

There are a variety of gold rush towns along the route, in the central area, you'll be in Mark Twain and Brett Harte country, and there are pretty lakes and scenic rivers along the route.

If you are, as you say, more interested in the scenery, I don't know where you would find a better route between Tahoe and San Diego.

It's definitely scenic, and definitely slow. If you are trying to do Tahoe to SD in one day, I wouldn't try to do that whole section of 49. If you plan to stop overnight, do it in the mountains, not at Fresno.

An alternative might be to leave Tahoe via 89/88 over Carson pass; very scenic. The section of 49 from 88 to Sonora is a good gold country overview; plan on stopping in Columbia.

When/if 49 starts to take too long, cut down to the 99 freeway (boring, dusty, hot, full of trucks, but fairly fast moving).

Most of the towns along 49 have a range of motels. Bigger towns like Placerville, Sonora, and Mariposa have more choice. Pretty much all the towns along 49 are somewhat tourist oriented and reasonable choices for a stop.

Going down 80 to 49 works OK as well. Nevada City has the Empire Mine state park. Coloma is a good stop in that northern section of 49.
