Trying to find a cheap (under $400) flight from Boston to Acapulco in March

Everything is at least $500 and involves 2 stops! Why is is this so hard? Do any Mexico experts have any tips? Should I try a travel agent?

It is those taxes that kill the fares to Mexico...the taxes can be more than the cost of the flight itself.

On my last couple of trips from the D.C. area to Mexico, I have taken a U.S. airline to Monterrey and then caught a flight on the MExican airline called Vivaaerobus to whereever I am going in Mexico. Much cheaper this way for me. Vivaaerobus has been reliable for me. I see Delta flies from Boston to Monterrey for about $398 in March.

Then I searched the Vivaaerobus site (click the American flag in right upper corner for English) and they are having incredible specials btwn Monterrey and Acapulco in March - like $7 each way. No kidding. But of course you have to deal w/timing btwn the U.S. and Mexican flights.

I see Continental flights from Logan to Mexico City for $298 in March. You can try getting to Mexico City and taking a Mexican airline from there to Acapulco. Vivaerobus does not go that route but there certainly must be other Mexican airlines that do.

You are awesome! Thanks so much. My husband's family is from Mexico City, and they are all driving to the reunion, so maybe it would be better to fly to MEX and then have one of them pick us up at the airport and drive us to Acapulco. It might be more tiring, but long flights with many stopovers are also tiring.

Looks like I have enough FF points on Capitalone for a free trip to Acapulco on Continental at the current best rate - $476 US per ticket. It will involve a sleepover in Newark, but, if we use the points, it will cost us only $472 total so we can easily spring for $100 for the Newark Airport Marriott.

We also have about 15000 miles each on Continental - so maybe we can get a free one-way??? So there are options.

Going to check out the vivaerobus link now.

usernameistaken, if you decide to book on Vivaaerobus, be aware of the fee structure of the tickets- it depends on how many bags you bring. If you just bring a carry-on (small one) it is $7, if you check one bag be sure to get the next tier ticket for $15, etc. They hold you to the bag count.

I beleive that Continental requires a RT to use their FF points. And I have never seen a trip to Mexico less than 17,500 points each way on Continental. But your Capitolone options is nice if the flight is available!

Good luck. I like Acapulco. Old time Mexican fun there. Pie de la Cuesta is a nice afternoon trip outside of town. You can rent horses to ride on the beach there.

emd3 - thanks for the info - you are right, continental one-ways are 17500 - didn't check whether we could use it one-way since we each have only 15000 miles. The cheapest flight we found with good dates and connections is $476, which is coincidentally the exact number of Capitalone points we have for a free ticket. With, CO, you buy the ticket and they just reimburse you.

We are waiting to get confirmation of the dates from la familia.... hope the flights are still available. Boston-Houston-Acapulco on the way over (lv 7 AM arrive 1 PM) and ACA-Newark-Bos - this requires an overnight in Newark but it means a straight flight from ACA to Newark. Even if it means we have to spend $100 for an airport hotel, it still works out cheaper than any other flight.

p.s. You might be able to get a good rm. at Newark airport for less than $100. Last April I stayed at the Days Inn, right outside the main airport entrance at Newark airport, for $75 total w/taxes. Really a very decent hotel, very clean, free wireless, spacious rm., restaurant and lounge 6 am til midnite, free shuttle across st. to airport, good reviews on tripadvisor. Could not have gotten a better deal, I looked at all of them before booking that place. Would stay there again.

Thanks for the tip! And, FWIW, for the weekend we are going, it is more expensive to fly to MEX than to ACA. Well, just that one continental flight.

So it looks like the dates are April 7 to April 11. I bought a ticket on Continental (have 24 hours to change my mind). For $576 pp, we are flying Bos-Houston-Acapulco and back, about eight hours each way. Flight times are good and we will get one free ticket.

Not ideal but good.
