SharonNRayMc seeking restaurant recs - Lima (Miraflores area)
Does anyone have a restaurant recommendations for Lima?
We have eaten at La Rosa Nautica and at Brujas de Cachiche. Would like to try some place else on this upcoming trip. I would like one fabulous fine dining place for our last night in Lima and then some others in an inexpensive to moderate price range.
Thank you for the recommendations. We will be staying in the Miraflores neighborhood.

Highly recommend Las Tejas in the downtown area of Miraflores. Very good food. We ate there last May(2005).
I googled the name and pulled up this site which discusses the restaurant.
Las Tejas
Diez Canseco 340, Miraflores. Tel 444-4360.
Offering good Peruvian dishes at $10-$15 per person. They have live music on Friday and Saturday evenings.

Astrid and Gaston is consistently written up as one of the gourmet restaurants in Miraflores, Lima. We ate there last week and my hubbie said it was his best meal in all of Peru, and in a long time. He had tuna tartare on potato appetizer, guinea pig (cuy), and homemade sorbet, with a special fruit candy from Cuzco served with the check. I had goat cheese ravioli with tomatoes with a Peruvian dessert sampler (the rice pudding was amazing, very unusual and delicious). Need reservations. Total bill was maybe $60 for the two of us including fruit drinks (my peach juice was yummy).

Hi Sharon,
I enjoyed reading your posts from your trip last year. Where in Peru are you going to in May?
I think our itinerary is set now for April: Lima-Cuzco/Sacred Valley-Manu-Lake Titicaca to LaPaz. I am very excited!
What hotel in Miraflores are you staying at?

Hi Tina,
Well, I just now finished the 2005 trip report and posted the last bits. Whew! These reports I do never seem to be short. Here's the link if you want to pick up where you left off:
http://fodors.com/forums/threadselec...p;tid=34567048
We will be off to explore northern Peru in May. Ray and our son will go several days before me so they can enjoy a 4 day father-son hike in the Cordillera Blanca area. Ray has more vacation time than I have right at the moment, and I think this will be a great time for the two men in my family. Our son will be graduating from university this spring and this is the first family vacation in four years for us. We are so excited. I will meet up with them in Huaraz. Our objectives for this trip will be to explore all of the ultra-cool archeaological sites of northern Peru, enjoy magnificent mountain scenery of the Andes, glacial lakes, hot springs, hit the great museums, explore the cloud forests & ruins in the Chachapoyas area and then head home.
We'll be home for a couple weeks and then after about two weeks at home we will be off on another long weekend trip... our son's graduation cermonies.
Your itinerary looks very good because it includes a good bit of variety and a fairly direct route. Will you be including Machu Picchu? I think it is certainly one of the most amazing highlights Peru has to offer. Sure hope you have about two weeks (or more) for your trip.
In Lima we will stay at the Hotel Antigua ... http://www.peru-hotels-inns.com/

Hi Sharon,
Your new trip sounds exciting. Sigh, I wish we had more time to spend in Peru. We have 15 days including travel days. We are definitely going to MP! We are staying in SV a few days to get acclimated and to see some of the sights in that area. Did you overnight in Aguas Caliente? Looking for a good, reasonably priced hotel for the night there...
I just read your new posts. Do you think Cuzco or LaPaz has the best quality & prices on alpaca garments?
Thanks for your advice,
Tina

Tina,
La Paz will certainly have better pricing.
In La Paz check out Millma:
http://www.bolivia.com/empresas/millma/main.asp
In Cusco, Alpaca III stores have fine quality sweaters. (They also have a store in Puno.)
When we went to MP (1999) we did stay in Aguas Calientes. We stayed at Gringo Bill's, which was quite an experience. The place was a little rough. I wrote up a piece about Gringo Bill's and my husband also wrote a piece... very different viewpoints. If you like, I can see if I can track these down. It was also a long time ago, so things can change quite a bit in seven years.

Hi Sharon,
Thanks for the tips, will look out for those alpaca clothing stores.
I am getting really excited about our trip. Found out today we got a super great rate ($88) at the Hotel Europa in LaPaz! Things are shaping up and falling into place. YAY

Hi, I'm canadian and went to Peru not long ago and I had a great time...and definitely enjoyed Peruvian cuisine! I would recommend Astrid y Gaston, it just delicious...La Costa verde is also very good. If you happen to go to Arequipa and you are a meat lover, definitely go to Zig Zag...I had an excellent beef, llama, and ostrich steaks, for a ridiculous price! It was one of the best meals I had in my trip. Also go to Sol de Mayo, a restaurant in which you can try typical Arequipenean food...which is excellent by the way. Hope you enjoy your trip!

Oh Sharon! There are son many wonderful and romantic places I don't know where to begin!
My first choice would be COSTA VERDE by the beach. My second choice is definetely JOSE ANTONIO for authentic peruvian cuisine. I recommend their second location which is in a old mansion setting. My third choice is FRANCESCO for fabulous ceviche!
For less expensive options, you must try TANTAS, owned by the same people that own AStrid y Gaston. Another choice would be PESCADOS CAPITALES which has a nice rustic setting. Another new restaurant that is very much "in" among the local jet set is called LA MAR located not so far from Pescados Capitales. Don't forget that Lima also has some very fine chinese restaurants worth visiting...

Hi quimbymoy...
I recently wrote a practical travel guide for the Peruvian and Bolivian high Andes. I had a great deal of fun writing it, and particularly enjoyed writing the restaurant reviews. I have put the entire thing on line. Thought you might find it useful. Here is the link:

if you want to try excellent food, try to fit in among the locals and eat where 'THEY' eat. Go to the local markets and try great homemade food at a cheap price. Try to go to one of many cevicherias in San Luis Avenue or in Barranco as well.

csandoval - do you have any specific recommendations? I do enjoy mixing with the locals.
cmcfong, Yes, I plan to post from the road on www.travelerstogo.com where I will be able to edit my posts later to correct all the typos I will undoubtedly make when using the variety of keyboards I encounter on the road. Then, when I get home I will start on the official trip report - with photos.
Ray left Wednesday morning and is already having a blast. He saw Condors at Fortaleza Pass on the way from Lima to Huaraz, spent a couple days acclimating and did an acclimation hike today. Tomorrow he will start a 4-day trek in the Cordillera Blanca, the Santa Cruz Trek. He says the weather is glorious and it's just the beginning of the hiking season there.
Ray said he hiked the Laguna Churup today, and he had to climb a ladder up a cliff at one point. I sure hope he took photos and has kept a good journal so he can do a write-up of his experience.
As for me, I can't wait to get started on my northern Peru adventure. I suppose Monday will come soon enough. Perhaps I will sleep all day tomorrow (Sunday) and while in transit Monday so I can go... go... go... after I land in Lima.

easy...hire a taxi driver for the day and tell him to take you where the best cevicheria in El Callao is, or the best restaurant for Comida Nortena or Arequipena. There are many to choose from and not necessarily in Miraflores where you are going to pay the "tourist" price.
