Playa Del Carmen- All Inclusive near downtown but on beach

Hi, does anyone have suggestions for a 3-star or better All inclusive hotel to stay at in Playa Del Carmen that is on the beach and also walking distance to downtown? Or would you recommend somewhere else closer to Tulum or Xcaret (sp?)... where the beaches might be nicer? I and my "manfriend" hope to go in Jan 2012... yes, last minute but it is for medical reasons... work is driving me insane! We would like to go for 6-7 days and relax, see downtown, visit the sites but not have to rent a car if possible. Don't need fancy hotels but clean, comfortable and friendly staff are important. I have been searching the various websites and just can't decide. I want it all, I know....... any suggestions on places to stay / things to do...transportation around the area.... would be greatly appreciated! Thank you all!.

The only AI resorts right in the town of Playa are the Royal Playa del Carmen which is a great adults only AI, and the Gran Porto Real which is a family resort. They are sister resorts and are about a five minute walk from 5th Ave.

There is also Mahekal and Las Palmas (partial AI) at the north part of town which has built up considerably and is now quite a nice area.

The Royal might be what you want - downtown, nice beach. The beaches of Playa are sometimes a little crowded, but calm, sandy, and quite nice. The beach at Tulum is much less crowded, very wide, but the surf is often rough.
