How far in advance do you need to make reservations to these places? We would like to go the end of October/early November, but I want to make sure we'll be able to get rooms here. Thanks for any help.

No idea about Arenal Observatory, but for PL I recommend at least 3 or 4 months. We stayed during low season and still had a rough time getting 3 consecutive nights. The earlier the better for PL.

I tried to get reservations to Peace Lodge for one or more nights during the Christmas week and they were already fully booked! Of course, Christmas is a very popular time to go to Costa Rica!

I would go ahead and pick your week to go and contact them now. I was lucky just to get 2 nights early next month and I started my planning in March. Matter of fact, I saw PL the other night on Discovery HD, so it is getting a lot of positive press. Will be only harder to get in as word gets out about this place. I can already tell that CR is getting very popular since I was last there 3 yrs ago. Getting harder to get the hotels when you want in "green season". I couldn't get a room I wanted at Tabacon as they are completely booked early June. Go figure.

Thanks for all of your help. I have written to both places, the Observatory Lodge has responded that they still have Smithsonian rooms available the dates I want. Still waiting to hear back from the Peace Lodge, then it's time to book the plane tickets! I can't wait!
