Where after Mexico?

For the past five years, we have taken vacations in Puerto Vallarta, on the Mayan Riviera, and on Cozumel and have had a wonderful time. I think perhaps it is time to branch out and see another country! We enjoy a quiet, moderately priced hotel or condo on a white beach with good snorkeling. Ideally, in the evening we would be able to walk or take a cab ride into a small town for dinner and/or drinks. I would welcome your ideas.

If you want a change but still a Spanish speaking country, you could try Belize. The beaches are not the best but OK, snorkelling/diving is great. Try Ambergris Caye (more expensive) or Caye Caulker (more laid back, backpacker type of place). San Pedro on Ambergris is a very small town but they have lots of great condos you can rent, good food, not much night life. We had fun there.

I was going to suggest Belize as well (although I think that the official language is English, not Spanish). It's a much smaller country than Mexico, but people are very friendly. There's a lot to do there. Costa Rica might be another alternative for you, Sue, although I don't think that it's so good for snorkeling.

Now, if you wanted to go further (much further), you could try Australia. The good news there is that when we have winter in Canada, they have summer. The bad news is that it's just so far away and if you're looking for a week or 2 getaway, the flight is just too long.

Try Costa Rica.It has 7 distinct climatic zones all within A 2 hour drive of each other. If you get tired of the Rain Forest in the morning drive up to the cloud forest for the afternoon!

Many thanks for your responses. Costa Rica looks good. Do you have a specific recommendation for a hotel or condo on a good beach with some snorkelling?
