My wife is on a low gluten diet, has never had a problem finding things to eat in any of these towns. Lots of seafood, corn tortillas, guacamole, tamales, pulled pork, salads, home made soups, etc. Even though there is a fair amount of thick jungle, the whole area from Cancun to Tulum is quite civilizd with supermarkets, mega stores, gas stations, etc. There are many supermarkets in Playa, but also on the highway just outside Akumal and Tulum. There are also small markets close to the beaches. It's very easy driving - will you be renting a car?

We will definitely be renting a car. I like to have freedom that way. Thank you all for your time in providing such details. Please feel free to keep the information coming if you think of anything else

Read up on car rental in Mexico, if you have not done it before. You want to be sure to have the correct additional insurance, etc. Also some rental agencies are much more legit than others (as far as scams or ripoffs).

Soliman bay is very reasonably priced. Thanks for that advice. I am looking at the Sombras Del Viento in Soliman Bay on VRBO. Is anyone familiar with this property? Looks like there is a reef that make the swimming less than ideal in front of the property,,,,,or could that be seaweed? However, for the price it looks great.....and it has 2 pools. Is it a close drive to a better swimming beach?

I think we are going to stay in soliman bay for 11 days and isla mujeres for 4. We will go to isla mujeres first. Should we rent a car as soon as our plane lands in cancun or wait until we are done in isla mujeres and rely on cabs there? We definitely want a car while we are on the main land but not sure we need it for our stay in isla mujeres.

You don't need a car for Isla Mujeres, took one the first time we went and it was a major nuisance. You can take taxis and be sure and rent a golf cart for at least one day (about $45, you have to leave your drivers license as a deposit), so much fun tooling around the island, visiting the Turtle Farm, Punta Sur, be sure and stop for a drink at Villa la Bella on the east side (has a sign that says "beer so cold it will make your teeth ache" they have great margaritas and pina coladas made from scratch. Then get your car when you want to drive to Soliman Bay. Have a great time.

Does anyone have any recommendations for where to stay in isla mujeres? We have decided on soliman bay for the duration of our main land stay. Need ideas for isla.......or should we consider holbox island?

If you're interested in a condo on Isla, you can look at Ixchel or Nautibeach, both on Playa Norte. I have not stayed in either, but I would probably stay at Ixchel next time I go back to Isla. They both have websites, but you *may* get a better rate by looking on VRBO first (maybe?).
