Waterfall Rappelling / Arenal Area

What kind of shoes can I wear for rappelling? I don't have heavy sandals with straps, just flip flop type that would go away. I'm bringing water shoes for rafting, but those have thin uppers and the soles are kinda flimsy too. I see people in the photos wearing tennis shoes but how would I ever get them dry?

Any suggestions? I'm trying to avoid buying spendy athletic sandals at the last minute, especially since I've never found any that were very comfortable. Are water shoes enough to protect your feet from the rocks?

I would go with Keen "Venice" or "H2O" and possibly purchase them on Ebay for a lot less than in the stores. If you wear Women's size 8 or smaller you can get them for a little less in the kids section. Also, Salomon Tech Amphibians are good and they run on sale frequently on Travel Country website. Tennies probably won't dry, but if you don't want to spend $ at least they would be secure. We found the Keens were great because we were always finding ourselves walking in water or getting wet somewhere during the day!

I think I'm going to have to make one more trip to REI or Sportman's Warehouse. I'll check the internet too and see what shipping timeframes look like. We leave in less than a week so my options are decreasing.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Bought a pair of Vasque's tonight. They seem really comfortable and sturdy. Can't wait to give them a try.
