Varig - JFK - RIo
Has anyone taken the overnight from JFK to Rio with a change of planes in Sao Paolo? How much time is need for the connection in Sao Paolo? (is 50 minutes enough?) Also, any comments on Varig? What kind of inflight entertainment do they have? Thanks.

Yes I have gone to Rio with a stop in Sao Paulo first. 50 minutes is plenty of time because you don't have to leave the terminal, what you do is get off 1 plane and the airline will move your bags for you? Or are you going on another airline? Do you have to get your bags and go through customs in Sao Paulo? If you do then I would question 50 minutes as being very close. I go on Continental and they stop in Sao paulo but I do not have to go through customs, we just go in a holding pen and wait 1 hour and our bags are put on the other plane very simple.

If you booked Varig all the way then Im sure they will have you very near your connecting flight and move all your bags, sounds like your ok, once you get on your Rio flight from Sao Paulo its only a 40 minute trip. I do this all the time on Continental and Im sure they will have a Varig representative there to guide you. I usually grab a couple of beers in between flights at the snack stand to wake me up after flying 9 hours, good luck and Boa Viajem.

I have always been very pleased with Varig's international service, though I hear that their domestic flights leave something to be desired. Then again, doesn't that hold true of U.S. airlines, too?

Anyway, haven't done JFK-Brazil, but have done their Miami-Rio flight and haven't had any problems. Flight attendants are fine and the food is interesting, in a good way (usually). Boa viagem!
