Using Calling Cards in Mexico
We are going to Playa Del Carmen in a couple of weeks and I am wondering which phone card is the best to make calls from Mexico to the US. I found one online called TelMex with a flat rate of 50cents/min. for calls to US. Is there a better one out there?
Thanks!

What you want to do is use the Telmex phones. Donot use the ones in the hotel lobby.
You canbuy this phonecard anywhere,in any small grocery store etc.
This is the best and cheapest way to call home.
The card has this small chip in it and when you place it into the telephone, itdoes not start tobe used up until someone picks up the phone at the other end.
A busy signal,or no one at home, this does ot use up the card. But if the answering machine comes on at the other end then your card will start bing used.
Let us say you buya card for 10 minutes.
Put the card in the phone , now dial home,as soon as someone picks up the phone at your home (USA),then you will see the card read:9:59, 9:58 9:57, etc as the seconds go down.
When you finish talking ,take a quick look at the card as you pull it out.
If it read 4:38,then you have 4 minutes and 38 seconds left for the next call.
I am sure you probably know most of this

As international calls from Mexico can be quite expensive, you might investigate your home (residential) long distance carrier's calling card rates and, if you're planning to make a lot of calls back to the US, whether it's cost effective to activate an international calling plan for a month or so (I pay about $0.15/minute using such a plan, whether the calls are from home, a calling card in the US, or the same calling card from Mexico).
I've seen people comment that prepaid calling cards from Sams Club or Walmart are also very cost effective, but don't have any experience with them.
Whatever you do, do NOT use your credit card to call from a pay phone, Telmex or other brand (they're plastered with decals saying "Call the US or Canada"
. Calls can easily run $2-3/minute on such an arrangement.

AT&T calling cards from Sam's Club work in Mexico.
Before you leave home, call the cust. svce. # on the card to find out the country code and which phones to use.
I would buy one for the person who might call you, if they call their US phone service and find out if their home phone long distance is expensive.
