Trogon Lodge vs. Savegre

Trying to decide between a stay at Trogon Lodge vs. Savegre. Interested in seeing quetzals, but we're not serious birders. Looking for a clean room, and a good Costa Rican dinner.

We loved Savegre and going out birding with Marino Chacon from there. And we saw 3 quetzals (from 6 ft) on the road into the property. We had one of the lovely new spacious cabins with great bath and fireplace. The food was nothing to write home about. We were able to get a view of Trogon on our way to Savegre (they're maybe a mile or two apart), it looked nice too and gets good reviews. I'm sure you'd be happy with either. It's a really pretty country valley area.

Definitely agree you won't go wrong with either. Marino is an excellent guide as Glover stated. We aren't serious birders either, but he was so good to make sure we saw as much as possible. Very patient, knowledgeable, and fun! Excellent English.

We loved our stay in Trogon Lodge. Setting is more beautiful than Savegre's.

We've stayed at Savegre 3 different times [I'm a serious birder...] and enjoyed it very much. Great atmosphere, good Tico food and wonderful birds.

We have stayed at Savegre, love the hummingbirds off the deck. My husband stayed at Trogon this past summer. He thought the actual grounds at Trogon were nicer but when pressed, he did say that he would prefer to go back to Savegre next time. It has a nice family feel. I agree though that the food is just so-so. Not bad, just nothing to really get excited about. When they have a full crowd there they set up a nice buffet which we did think was very good. The other nights we were there the menu seemed a bit limited.

Savegre Lodge was one of my favorite stops last summer. I agree with Jessie -it has a comfortable feeling. The staff were very friendly and accomodating, the grounds lovely, the food very good [especially the trout dishes!}, and the rooms comfy.

The guides were great. especially Marino! I can't imagine a better birding guide.

Thanks for all the responses so far. Sounds like most of you prefer Savegre. Their junior suites are quite a bit more than the rooms at Trogon however, so I'm still considering Trogon. How was the food there?
