We just returned from Belize and Tikal. We are independent travelers who really wanted to see Tikal. What worked very well for us was to fly in to Flores at the start of our trip, spend two nights there, visit the ruins, and then fly from Flores to Belize. We stayed at the Camino Real Tikal, and would highly recommend it. The Camino Real will pick you up at the airport and return you to the airport, at no extra charge. The hotel arranged a taxi to take us to and from Tikal for $50. We were driven to Tikal in the morning, our driver waited 6 hours for us to tour the ruins at our own pace and then we were driven back to the hotel. That was a great deal for $50. We thought this worked perfectly.

Thanks everyone for all the info. As it turns out, we've decided not to go to Belize/Tikal this trip--we're heading to Mexico instead, as I was able to get frequent flyer seats. So we'll be birding San Blas and the Puerto Vallarta area. But, we will definitely do this belize/trip sometime soon, perhaps when we can spend a few more days to make it less rushed. So I'll be saving all this info. Meantime, see ya on the Mexico forum ;-)
