Shots Fired at Mawamba Lodge C.R.

Hi Everyone:

I just received this e-mail from a friend of mine in Costa Rica.

"It is raining for 5 days now and the Tico's are wondering what is going on."
"This is suppose to be the dry season."

"We left Sunday at 6 AM for a 3 day - 2 night tour to Tortuguero National Park.

We went by bus to a little place called Matina, then further on a gravel road until we got to a river and boarded a boatfor our 2 and 1/2 hour ride to Mawamba Lodge.

It rained from the time we left San Jose until we arrived at Mawamba.

This place is truly a Rain Forest and soon our excellent guide had us cruising the canals.

On our last night I was awakened by the sound of gunshots.
It was 4:10 AM

We just stayed put in our room.

All went quiet again . The Lodge did not want to talk about the matter...but our guide informed us of what happened.

It seemed that an individual managed to gain access into two room occupied by some elderly German tourists.

He removed their luggage while they slept.

He was leaving the Lodge when the security guard came along but was sprayed in the face by some substance the thief had ...as he started running away.

The Security Guard fired off 2 shots but missed as it was dark and his vision was not the best (due to the spray)

The shouting and shots woke up the manager who came out with a rapid shot gun and fired off 5 shots at the fleeing culprit.

The culprit dropped everything and ran into the jungle.... but he was recognized, and it seems that he lived just across the river from the lodge.

The police were going after him as we left early in the morning for out trip back to San Jose."

Well I guess my friend had an exciting trip to Mawamba and Tortuguero.

I guess surprises can happen anywhere and anytime.

Would this deter me from going to Tortuguero.... NOT AT ALL!!!

Just nice to know you have to be cautious always.

Percy

Yes - What an adventure! Hope they catch the guy and put an end to this nonsense!

But certainly anything can happen, thankfully this is not the norm.

I still think we all need to meet in CR someday!

You got it right dfarmer !!!!

It would be great to meet. Can you just imagine some of us Fodorites bumping into each other at some place in Costa Rica.!!!

Have not heard from tully and Ivk and greenfieldhunter on this board for a while.....maybe they are hiding.

I am going away for the month of March.

I am going to see shillmac's cousin and faithie's cousin and yours too dfarmer.

More details later but for now I will leave you all guessing.!!!

OK! I did not even know that Shillmac, Faithie and I were related - except that we all have a love of Costa Rica!

So Percy, are you headed to CR?

I can't get back until Feb 07! This is maybe going to be the longest year of my life!

Faithie has been giving me lots of good input on the Carib board. Looks like I am taking my girls to Negril for a Mom/Daughters trip for some special time before they both head off to college. Yes, a little teary and little excited and oh so supportive, but what the heck am I going to do once they are gone. Well of course go to Costa Rica for an entire month!

OK so Percy thanks for the info in the original post - sorry everyone else for getting TOTALLY off topic!

No I did not mean that you and faithie and shillmac were related in that way.

But rather that I am going to see each one of your cousin's separately..!!!

Okay let me explain.

I am going to Australia and New Zealand and Tasmania for the month of March.

I will see the Koala Bear ( cute and cuddly) this is faithie's cousin. !!!

The cute Kiwi Bird ( The New Zealand Icon) is your cousin , (LOL).
and
do you know who shillmac's cousin is... yep, that's right, the Tasmanian Devil.

Why do I feel I am in deep trouble with shillmac now !!!!(LOL)
But wait a minute... I will pickout the cutest Devil you ever saw...

Somehow I don't think shillmac is accepting me trying to smooth things over!!!!...Good Night shillmac.

Thanks for sharing the email from your friend. Now THAT'S heart-pounding excitement!!!
It doesn't deter me from a hoped for trip to CR in 2007, not having been able to make it in 2005.
Percy, LOL re: Tasmanian devil talk.you are supposed to be the serious one--the "chaperone" of a future GTG in Costa Rica!

Hi Percy,

Here I am! I would also love to hear from Ally about her adventures in building and opening her hotel. Did you see her website yet? http://www.plumeriasdelmar.com/

I'm sure she is very busy. Or, she may be afraid that if she posts, it could be considered by some as advertising?

We have no trip to CR planned in the near future. We are going to be in Europe this summer and who knows where after that.

Have you written to Oscar lately? My husband wants me to email him to apologize in advance. You see Germany is playing Costa Rica in the first game of the World Cup this year. (They had LOTS of soccer discussions during our trip).

Have a great time in Australia & New Zealand! (Can I be the wombat's cousin?)

Hi Ivk
Nice to hear from you again.

Yes you can be the wombat's cousin.

I will remember that when I see the wombats and tell them Ivk says hello!

Where in Europe are you heading to..Germany!?

Thanks for the website.

Hi Everyone!
Appears I need to defend myself from Percy's carryings ons. . . .Tasmanian Devil, indeed. Those things are UGLY!
Hmmmm, I see how it is. . . .

All joking (or were you?) aside, have a great time, Percy. It truly sounds like a great trip. . .and thanks for the Mawamba incident report. Interesting. . .gee, I'd hate to have that happen. Our time in CR has been so trouble free, sometimes I think we've just been lucky. . .or blessed!

Donna, what a great idea to take your girls on a trip before they're off to college. That's what memories are made of. And you'll be just fine. . .but yes, it is hard to let them go! Then eventually, when they come back, they'll cramp your style! But that may take awhile!

I am having severe withdrawal from CR. . .I find myself daydreaming several times a week, seeing this place or that in my mind. Actually, it's kind of a bummer as I realize that life is too short to always be wishing one were in some other reality somewhere else! A piece of my heart is always there. . .and I miss my Mama Tica and family (from school and homestay).

We are crossing our fingers that we won't feel too (financially and otherwise) wiped out after our daughter's June wedding on Tortola to get down to Costa Rica for a couple of weeks at least. After being accustomed to spending 4-5 weeks there during June/July the past 3 years, 2 weeks is going to seem like nothing, but I'll take it!

Has anyone checked out the new website for Hotel Amatierra (formerly La Finca de Ama)? I looked at it the other day and Bob and Jill have some interesting plans for the place---see what you think: www.amatierra.com

Neta and Arbel left for Israel today. They stayed the last couple of nights at Las Orquideas--a first for them.

Well, nothing much else to say. . .just didn't want to be left out! Hi Faithie. . . .koala girl. . .

Everyone have a great weekend! We are hosting Miss Isabelle this weekend at our home. . .so I'd better get some sleep while the sleeping is good!

Now totally off topic..

As for meeting up with folks - I was on the shuttle bus back from Panajachel to Guat City a week or so ago and there's a couple from Vancouver WA, a girl from Seattle WA and I grew up in Vancouver BC so talk about coincidence then we introduce ourselves and he recognized me from my posts on here and on ThornTree...
Small world ! ! !
