Short Tour/Activity between Arenal & San Jose

Hi,
We have a return flight from San Jose airport around 4:00 PM on Dec 27th. We would be leaving from Arenal hotel in the morning around 7:30 or 8:00 AM with a private van & driver for San Jose. The ride takes 3 hours.

I would like a suggestion for any short activity / tour and also a lunch place right on the way to spend some time in between so that we don't reach airport too much before our flight.

BTW, what would be a good time allowance to reach the airport before our flight on Dec 27th - 2 or 3 hours?
Thanks

Sarchi, Grecia and Zarcero are cute little towns that would make a nice stop over. Each has their own minor attraction (Sarchi has the crafts factories/stores, Grecia has the metal church, and Zarcero has the wonderfully sculpted topiary plaza).
