seeking tour advice-Costa Rico
After having reviewed several websites and books, the consensus is to not drive oneself in CR. I would appreciate any input on guided tour groups. I have looked into Smithsonion,Elderhostel, and Nat'l Geographic. As an aside, let me say that tour groups are not my preferred style of travel. TIA, Joe

I like both. Before our first trip, I researched for about 85 hours online.
I was this close (|) to hiring a private driver. I wanted the input of a local driver on things one does not find on a map, or in a guide.
I chose to drive us and was anxious for about an hour. After that, it was fine.
For our next trip (which I am currently researching) I plan to combine both modes of travel, but do not wish to join a tour group and become one of many sheeple in a bus/van. I wouldn't do this at home, so I don't do it abroad.

I agree with triplesecdelay.
We just returned and drove ourselves. I would not have traded the freedom and flexibility for anything, especially a tour group. If you are fearfull, afraid of heights,a woman or women alone, etc, maybe hire a driver. We are late 40's live in NJ, if you can handle a NY commute CR is no problem.
Sorry for the spin but it sounds like you would just be happier with freedom.
