Seeking recommendation for places to stay in Costa Rica

We are planning to vacation in CR somewhere between September and October for a week. This will be our first visit. We would prefer to be on, or close to, the beach, but we really love nature and would also want to visit the rain forest, see monkeys, etc. I've seen some spectacular pictures of beautiful beaches with the mountains rising very near the beach. We'd love to be in that type of setting.

Also, is it safe there? Any tips for novice travelers to the area?

Thank you in advance.

You should be aware that September and October is the rainy season. Your best bets weatherwise would be the Guanacaste area and the Caribbean area.

In early Sept. you could catch the turtle nesting in Tortuguero. You could spend a night or two there then head down to Puerto Viejo for beaches and the rest of your trip.

Hmmm....good to know about the weather. Thank you both - I'll look into your suggestions.

You would probably like the Manuel Antonio area - pretty beaches and tons of fairly tame wildlife. Like br mentioned though, that's the height of rainy season. I don't know how set in stone your dates are.

Based on the feedback, we are going to push the trip back. We are thinking maybe in the Spring next year. I spoke to a work colleague who also recommended the Manuel Antonio area. Thank you all.
