Just a note- sandals are not allowed on the trails at La Selva Biological Station. Rubber boots are available for those who need them.

Keen's are fine at Tabacon & beach. Hiking around Arenal or MA I would get a pair of lightweight, waterproof/breathable hiking boots with mid-ankle support. You'll appreciate it if it rains and gets muddy, or you start climbing over rocks & tree roots or go through streams. Wear your boots down on the plane. Boots, Keen's are all you need. Throw in some cheap flip flops for comfort. Break in the Keen's before you go to avoid blister's
