safe to leave luggage in car?

Hi all. We naive New Yorkers are going to drive around Costa Rica for the first time, and we're wondering if it was safe to leave our luggage in the car for a few hours while we go sightseeing? If not, do you have any suggestions? Thanks.

Just about everybody will tell you, dont leave any valuables in your rental car. Find an area you want to explore, find a hotel/cabina. Leave your valuables there in the hotel.

Go to your hotel and put it in storage. Not sure it is safe to leave your stuff in your car in any country.

Leave nothing in car , and carry just enough cash you need for that day with you- leave the rest of valuables at your hotel and in room/hotel's safe.

I have made this mistake in the past.. we were driving from one place to another, and came across a great place to go surfing. so we stoped for about two hours and went surfing... We parked the car where we could see it, and we took our extra boards and put them inside the car.. someone just drove up and took all out boards and all my clothes and our tent... it almost looked like they had a key to our car.. all of this happened without us even noticing... so, no, it is not safe to leave luggage in a car

With just a small amount of effort you could find a lot of info about this subject.
In a nutshell......do not leave anything in your car for even a minute!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I love Costa Rica and I love the people there but this is a big problem.
