Hi, all -
After a few weeks in Guatemala we'll be heading to Roatán for a few weeks next July. We'll be staying on Camp Bay Beach the 1st week and in Sandy Bay the 2nd week. My husband is an avid flyfisherman, I'm a diver, and we both love to hike and snorkel so we have those options covered; we did lots of those and visited the iguana farm on a previous visit to Roatán. I haven't visited Punta Gorda and am fond of Garifuna cultural experiences so that's on the list.

I'm looking for recommendations for other options including unique dining and day outings. Thanks and happy trails!

For a unique dining experience, check out Hole-in-the-wall, only accessible by boat (they pick you up on the shore in Jonesville. Sunday is all you can eat lobster and steak. Sounds fancy, right? Not at all! The dock feels like it is tipping into the water, the benches are rough and weather beaten. The rum punch, negates the tipping dock. The food and staff second to none. It's time to get in line for the buffet when Bob blows the conch shell.

Our trip was primarily for R&R and snorkeling, so we didn't go too far from West End/West Bay. But we had 1 day when we knew it was going to rain, so we did a couple of excursions. We walked over to the butterfly farm and the rain more or less held off until later in the day and we saw a lot of gorgeous butterflies. Later that day, we took a local bus into Coxen Hole. Definitely not an charming and attractive town, and with all the rain, it really was pretty bad, but oddly enough, it was a fun little excursion. While trying to dodge the giant puddles in Coxen Hole, we saw a local bus heading to another town called Mud Hole!

Definitely low key outings, but we enjoyed the day even with the rain.

Where is the butterfly farm? And we had an interesting - though I agree not "charming" visit to Coxen Hole last time where we caught a chicken bus headed to the iguana farm. It stopped a lot to pick up and drop off people and made a lengthy stop where a guy with a fairly large propane tank on his shoulder got off and had it filled from a tank by a tiny rural home while we waited. There was a milk jug of water and they'd pour it periodically into a hole between the driver's seat and where the ayudante perched so the bus wouldn't overheat...memories. ;-)

On my first trip to Roatan I had a heck of a time finding out where to stay, what to do and what the different dive shops had to offer. That was in April 2010 but this time when I started planning my trip I discovered a new website, http://tourismroatan.com and it has a lot of travel information about where to stay, places to eat, nightlife, diving and other activities. For diving or snorkeling I highly recommend Bananarama Resort...very close to the reef
