Ridiculous airfare for President's week '08, NYC to Cancun (or Cozumel)

Non-stops for this time are currently running over $900 which seems insane to me. Last year when we went Christmas week we encoutnered similar fares, but I was able to snag one to Cozumel for <$500.

I've checked many consolidator sites, airline sites, and other booking site, but they all show the same $900+. What are the odds of catching a break in airfare over the next few months for this time and route?

wow, I'd definitely wait, they should come down at least a little. That is high!

Two years ago we paid $700 for the same time period. But you have to be careful. Two days later friends of ours who decided to come along paid $1,200. If I remember correctly, we bought our tickets in September.

I feel you. I was given 2 extra paid days off for 4th of July making it a 5-day weekend, airfare was triple the usual and available flights would have only gotten me away for a day and a half. Were you able to get something- or another weekend?

We are stuck going by the school vacation calendar so we have little flexibility. Last year I right after I booked my airfare, it doubled, then eventually tripled.

I will go somewhere else if the fares remain this high.

ooh- sorry to hear that - is there an alternate nearby airport? Like one year, I flew to Ft. Lauderdale, getting the flight times I wanted & saving over $150 and then took a $40 cab to Miami to meet my cruise.

I cehcked all alt. airports that would work for us. Last year flying to Cozumel made a big difference. This is no longer the case.

At this point I am thinking of an alternative that won't be as pricey. At the moment though, airfares that particular week seem to be high across the board.

Did you check farecast.com and farecompare.com? They had cheap (one stop) flights listed for sub $500.

I did see those. those cheap ones have stops and turn a 4 hour flight into an 7+ hour trip. If I'm travelling for that many hours, I'd rather go to Europe.

While considering other alternatives for vacation, I will be checking airfares daily (if possible) to see if I can catch a break within the next couple of months.

In general I usually book airfare first. I guess I have to accept the fact the airfare has just become more expensive. The 3 family trips to Europe we've taken over the past 8 years, I played around with different open jaw combos that would work for us. WHen I found a good fare, I'd grab it. I never paid more than $500 (including the most recent trip that was 3 legs). I don't know if I'll ever see that again.

ANyway, I haven't given up yet on Mexico, in fact I even explored other areas of Mexico, but the airfares were similar. No good deals to be had...not yet anyway.

Thanks.
