Hi again, thanks for all the help so far, I'm giving Mexico City a rest while I quickly book flights ex London. We have Irish passports and we are looking at a cheaper indirect option with either a stopover of 1 hour and 43 minutes on the way to Mexico City (via Phoenix Sky Harbor) or 1 and a half hours via Dallas on the way back. Also are we more likely to be delayed with the recent govt developements with foreign policy.
Would those connecting times be too tight? British Airways would be direct but not only would it be very expensive but the seats are so tight these days and the service was very bad when we returned from Japan last year.

I think those times are too tight. But I am unclear where you are departing from? If it is a straight gate-to-gate transfer you might make it in 90 minutes. But if it is an airport that you need to clear Immigration & Customs you'd need more time. Phoenix is a huge airport, I've used it in the past for Mexico from Seattle, so even going gate to gate took a bit of time. Never gone thru Dallas.

I fly Seattle to Puerto Vallarta a couple times a year, but pay a bit more to have a nonstop flight which makes it super easy.

Assuming AA metal - right? OK - there is a slight wrinkle. LHR and DFW are trialing a new process where one doesn't need to retrieve luggage and re-check it. So the DFW connection would be a lot easier/trouble free.

I don't believe this applies at PHX so I wouldn't touch that one with a barge pole. Plus I just find DFW easier do an international to Domesric or International > International connection -- but that may just be that I have done it many times at DFW and only done PHX 2 or 3 times and I'm less comfortable there.

Or, if are you traveling cabin-bags-only then your chances are a lot better with either connection.

Oh -- and the DFW trial also means you don't need to go back through security.

American has become rigid about closing the doors 15 minutes before departure in an effort to get flights out on time. Once the doors are closed, they won't reopen them. You'll actually have 1:28 at PHX and 1:15 at DFW, both less time than you think.
