Renting a car in Costa Rica

From some people I heard that its not advisable to rent a car in CR. Has anyone rented a car? Or would it be better to use taxis and buses?

I love my independence so I will always rent a car. We love to explore or just run out for a quick bite or change our plans at the last minute.
But car rental in CR is expensive with thier manditory insurance etc. Roads are not in the greatest shape and signs are few and far between destinations but I think of it as part of our adventure.

We, too, enjoy renting and do it everytime. We like going where we want to go when we want to go there! Also, we have found it really isn't all that expensive (at least it doesn't seem so to us). We rent through Tricolor most of the time and with everything included, we pay around $260 for one week in a 4 X 4. A month ago I rented a standard shift regular auto from them for $148 for 4 days.

I'm with those like enjoy having a car. Have rented a car in Costa Rica 10 times and have never had a problem. I like Adobe Rent A Car.

We also enjoy driving. Just watch your stuff!!! We've used both Elegante and Adobe without any problems.

I wouldn't say it isn't advisable to rent a car in CR. We didn't rent one while we were there in January, and it worked great for us. But it depends on where you are going, how long you will be there, what you want to do while in the country.
