Recommendations for unique wonderful restaurants in Mexico City?
We are staying in La Casona hotel in MC for 7 nights mid Feb 2004. What might you suggest for restaurants? Any price is fine for great food and unique dining experience....Love charming restaurants with great food - any type of food. Thank you.

One nice place is Casa de la Sirena (I think that's the name). It's across from the big cathedral on the zocalo. Old historic building and good food.
You might want to try to get a copy of the Bon Appetit magazine in which they featured Mexico. It was a special edition and it's a beautiful magazine.

Hacienda de Morales in the Polanco area is
a great restaurant. International food and
upscale Mexican food. It used to be a hacienda out of town. Now it is a wonderful
restaurant right in Polanco. It is pricey
wealthy locals, no levis type restaurant.

I'd recommend the following:
In Polanco:
Villa Maria
La Valentina
Both serve very good Mexican food in a very nice atmosphere. Villa Maria can get really crowded, mostly with locals, so you can rest assured that it is excellent. La Valentina becomes a huge bar late at night.
Los Danzantes in Coyoacan.
Cambalache (if you like steaks, this is one of the best places in Mexico to have steak)
Los Girasoles
If you are brave enough to try something different, I'd recommend:
Villa Melon (right outside the Plaza Mexico bullring). They only work thu-sun, and they only serve tacos, but they have to be among the best tacos in the whole country.
La Fonda Santo Domingo (two or three blocks away from the Zocalo). It is a funny looking place, quite old and traditional. The house speciality is "Chiles en Nogada". This was a dish prepared originaly for Maximillian. It is a poblano pepper, stuffed with ground beef with raisins and nuts, and covered in a walnut sauce, sprinkled with pomegranates... just amazing
