Looking for suggestions for a quick new year's eve getaway to Mexico. It's just me and hubby, and we're looking for luxury. Four seasons punta mita was suggested, but appears to be booked. Other ideas for us??

Not too much luxury available in that area. I have been reading trip advisor all the time and you might want to check out Casa Obelisco it is in a small town but from what I have read there was hardly ever a negative coment.
The only other thing that would be in the luxury category would be to rent a Villa.

I'd look to Cabo or Cancun for what you describe.

where are you coming from?
Los Cabos has the most luxury ...
Esperanza, Palmilla and Las Ventanas are all very luxurious.
The Marquis is a little less expensive but still really nice.

Is it specifically a beach area you're looking for??

If so, you might also consider places like Casa Que Canta in Zihua or Ventanas al Paraiso en Los Cabos.

There are some outstanding luxury places in the colonial highland towns --- places like La Casa de la Marquesa. There's some great spa hotels in Cuernavaca, and of course, there's great hotels in Mexico City (where I'd probably recommend the Habita, though there's a Four Seasons there that often has *spectacular* weekend packages for the urban sophisticate).

Another idea that might trip your trigger is to fly into Merida and then head to one of the upscale hacienda properties. There's a bunch of these, and several of them are managed by Starwood Hotels under their Luxury Collection marque (www.starwoodhotels.com/luxury/). You can be as pampered as you like, then "rough it" for an afternoon excursion of climbing Mayan pyramids or horseback riding through jungle trails.

Mikemo's suggestion of Costa Alegre is good too...there's some great places in that area, and I'm sometimes shocked at how often it seems to lurk just under the radar of most Americans. (That mikemo...a knowledgable dude when it comes to Mexico...)

Check out grand velas in Nuevo Vallarta or the Hotel mayakoba in the Riviera Maya. (The later is brand new and i have a reservation there for the Xmas holidays) I stayed at the grand velas last year if you want any more info.
