Molly, please try again. I just received e-mail from a friend of mine so it is working. [email protected]
I wish I could help you with your choices but I don't know anything about those lodges you mentioned.
Well, we love birds but we do not consider ourselves hard core birders. This was the first time we kept a list. We too enjoy nature in general and Sevegre is an ideal place for it. There is a lot to do. Bosque del Rio Tigre is really birders? paradise. We saw there morphos flying around. Two years ago when we were in Monteverde we visited Butterfly Garden and I got some great shots of morphos. I will put them in our album so you could tell your husband where he could see them. Are you planning on going to Monteverde?
I don't know about Melvin's interests but if you book your trip with Marino in Savegre make sure you tell him that besides birds you are interested in butterflies. He showed us some beauties but I do not know what these butterflies were. I only know they were really beautiful.
When you go with Marino to see Resplendent Quetzal ask him about adult male quetzal who lost his tail.

In December my family stayed 4 nights in EL Rimanso in Osa. Food was terrible. They get water directly from the river and this could be a reason why my daughter got some kind of stomach bug after first day and had a problem for almost three weeks. She couldn't hold any normal food

We just returned 2/1 from third trip to Costa Rica. Planning to go to Bosque del Rio Tigre next year, now will definitely go based on your reviews! We stayed at Aviarios del Caribe on the Caribbean coast, it's a sloth refuge. Highly recommend it. Comfortable room, good value for price. Excellent included breakfast, on your own for other meals though, so you need a car..nearest town is Cahuita. Also, bring your passports when out and about, proximity to border means frequent checks. They do a lovely canoe tour along the Estrella river, great for birding and other wildlife. The sloth refuge itself is fascinating, and the babies adorable. They are very serious about their work.
Also stayed at Hacienda los Inocentes near La Cruz. Lodging in simple cabins with solar hot water and marginally tolerable mattresses, but great food, excellent service, excellent birding and well trained horses. They have a good trail you can bird on your own, and are within 30 minutes of Santa Rosa Nat'l Park, 1 hour from Rincon de la Vieja Park, and also near beaches.
We left rental car in San Jose and flew Sansa to the Osa, good commuter airline (and I'm a retired pilot, I watched closely!). Stayed at iguana lodge near Puerto Jimenez. Nice cabina, but website gives impression that you get the whole two story cabina.. we got just the second floor. Not a problem, but still misleading. The food was outstanding for breakfast and dinner, but for lunch they send you next door to their other property the Pearl of the Osa. Suffice it to say we ate one lunch and didn't go back, even though we'd paid for them. Local birding was good, lots of parrots and macaws, but we wished we'd driven down there as taxis were very expensive to Matapalo where the birding is superb. For those interested in swimming with dolphins, we did and it was great, but beware, we were stung by small jellyfish, as were several others. Don't know if that's a seasonal problem...
Have previously stayed at Vista del Valle 3x, Savegre lodge (fabulous, agree with other reviews) THE place to see Quetzals. Also Montana de Fuego, Villa Lapas, Rancho naturalista, El Sapo Dorado. Anyone with questions I'll try to answer!
