Phone Service, Food Safety

Hello,

We are leaving next Saturday for 2 days in Belize City and 5 days in the Cayo. I'm pretty sure my Verizon Cell Phone won't work - so what are our options to stay connected to kids and family in the states?

Is Belize like Mexico - only drink beer and eat cooked food? How safe is the water, fresh veggies/salad, etc...

Thanks!

I doubt your Verizon phone will work. You can rent a phone if you really need one. I just use e-mail at internet cafes. Some of them have cheap fees for calling the States as well.

I spend most of my time in Belize on the cayes, but have never had any trouble with food or water any where. I usually drink bottled water, the local stuff sometimes tastes funny to me. But, I brush with my teeth with tap water.

Belize doesn't seem to have the problems that Mexico does with people getting sick. I eat food from street vendors all the time. The food at the farmer's market in San Ignacio is awesome. Lettuce is expensive, so I don't eat many salads, the ones I have had haven't made me ill.

Ask Verizon about Belize. We just got back and had a strong signal on the phone on Caye Caulker. We didn't try to use it, though, because I was afraid of cost.

Thanks for the responses.

I did check with Verizon and they had to "turn on a feature", but it should work - but at $1.59/min, I won't be using it unless I have to!

I'm looking forward to the farmer's market in San Ignacio...

That's even worse than I expected. Might be handy for an emergency, though.
