Peru - Luggage on train to MP

If we're traveling from the Sacred Valley to Machu Picchu, spending one night, then taking the return train to Cuzco we'll need to take our luggage with us on the train.

I've read here that on the Vistadome there is room for a suitcase, but on the Peru rail website it says only an 11lb bag (duffle or backpack) is allowed per person). Is that enforced? Do I need to be on the safe side and buy different luggage to take - I was planning on each of us having a small wheelie suitcase.

Any experience with taking luggage on the train? Thanks.

If there are those limits, I've never seen them enforced. People bring MUCH bigger suitcases aboard those trains. (Not that they should.) I've always gone with a small wheeled suitcase like you're thinking of bringing, and it's been fine.

Hi Leslie. We were on the Vistadome to MP from Ollanta...and there is definitely no room in the train for a bag. the train has windows on the roof, so there is no ample bag storage. When we traveled, we each had a backpack that weighed about 25lbs. The conductor had to stash the bags on the floor over by the door because there was no room. If you are bringing the equivalent of a carryon bag, then i dont see a problem- but anything bigger than that is going to be more of a hassle to lug around than anything else. We carried our load- put everything we brought into a bagpack, which was the best thing we could have done. many of the streets are cobblestone, making it very difficult for rolling luggage. And, because we took everything on carryon on the planes, we never lost our luggage! Think about it...i would consider carrying your load. But if you cant and must bring a carryon with wheels that is no more than 25 , i wouldnt worry about the train. it'll just sit on the floor somewhere.

If you take the backpacker train they have plenty of room.

We're taking the vistadome so I guess I'll think about the luggage some more. I'm looking at some North Face duffels that are 24" so not huge. I guess worst case we could put them on the floor under our feet. Sounds like luggage with wheels could be a hassle just walking from the train to the hotel, etc.

Thanks for the advice.

veronana70 - Did you by any chance pick up your train tix in Ollanta or did you go to the office in Cusco? I've read you can get them in Ollanta but people said they didn't want to take a chance, so went to Cusco anyway. If our flight is delayed that may cause a problem since we're going directly to O. for the first 3 nts, not staying in Cusco.

veronana-- sorry, disregard. Just saw your other post regarding picking up the tickets -- or having the hotel do that. Thanks.
