passports for Mexico

Do you recommend a passport for travel to Cancun? Will just a drivers license and a birth certificate be sufficient? What kind of hassles are there without a passport? Thanks for your help.

I've been to Cancun twice without a passport. You just need a valid Driver's License and your Birth Certificate. Not a copy, it must have the raised seal on it. You shouldn't have any hassles.

You are probably o.k. for Cancun without a passport. If you go anywhere off the beaten path they become very helpful as many places will accept no other form of ID to cash traveler's checks. Likewise if you are traveling by bus or anywhere the military will check ID's they make life easier. If you go with a birth certificate remember it must be a certified copy with a raised seal.

That drivers license should have a picture on it too not only for Mexico but for checkig in to your airline.

We just got back from Mexico (Isla Mujeres and Akumal area) and flew in and out of Cancun airport without passports. For my husband and I we brought driver's licenses, raised seal birth certificates and a marriage certificate. For the kids we just had raised seal birth certificates. There were no problems anywhere - or with cashing traveller's checks. Have fun!
