HELP! Travelling to Mexico with child with no passport - tomorrow!
ARG. my daughter is taking a friend with us to playa del carmen (both 9), and her parents have just discovered that her passport is expired. whoops! we leave early friday morning.
she has a birth certificate, exp. passport, and a notarized letter saying she can go. will that be enough?
thanks for any reassurance . . .

You should be fine. Just be prepared to bribe someone if you need to. A similar thing happened when we went with a friend to Cancun. His mother worked in the State Department and got a letter/documentation for him and he was reassured that as an American citizen he did not need more. At the Cancun airport they told him they would have to take him downtown to process papers. They offered, for a "fee" (about $35), to handle matters immediately. He did so, without complaining, and we were off! Enjoy! You'll be fine.

My in-laws flew to Mazatlan a few years ago (pre 9-11) with expired passports. When they noticed this (at the airport in Canada just before they left), they were able to have th e old passport notarized before they left... try that.

All that Mexico requires at this time for a minor under 16 is a passport OR a state issued birth certificate with raised seal and a notarized letter of parental consent. I am asked this question as a TA all the time. Go and have a good time.

According to what I have read the passport requirement may or may not go into effect for Mexico. If it does the target date is January 06. A certified birth certficate plus notarized letter from both parents should do it. I have brought lots of kids to Mexico and it has never been an issue. Lots of times they have not even requetsed the letter. U.S. immigration on the way back may prove to be the hardest part.
