nice hotel in San Jose
Any suggestion for a well situated hotel in San Jse? There are 5 of us (2 rooms) and we will only be there for 2 nights and 1 day of touring, but still would like a hotel that is situated where we can get to and from places of interest . Thanks sheila

I am not an expert but I have a couple of suggestions. When we are there next we will stay in the Hotel Don Carlos. It is a quaint, nice hotel. I think that the Gran Costa Rica is also nice and is in a good, central location. I hope that this helps.

I have stayed at the Don Carlos several times. It is a lovely place. They have a nice little cafe area with a coffee bar and you can order light meals from there. They have a great tour office that can help you with just about any aspect of travel in CR. Free email. Not a fancy place but kind of fun and one of the more popular and it has lots of character. If they are full you could try the Hotel Dunn Inn around the corner and a couple of blocks down. They have a great souvenier shop.
The Aurola Holiday Inn is about 2 or 3 blocks closer to the actual downtown area from Don Carlos and it has a casino and all the amenities that a larger chain would have. They have really fixed up the park across the street. I stayed there last year because I could only get 1 night at DC and at that time they had a sign saying that they did not accept travelers checks. That may have changed but if you go there and want to use them check with them when you make the reservation.
One word of caution about the Don Carlos..request a quiet room when making the reservations. It will never be totally quiet but there are some rooms that are just awful for noise.
We have been giving you options within San Jose proper but there are some other options. If you want easy access to San Jose without staying right in it you could look at the Hotel Bougainvillea. They have a free hourly shuttle into San Jose and the little town is darling to walk around in also. A taxi to points of interest in San Jose would be very inexpensive if you choose to do that.
Another option would be Finca Rosa Blanca. I spent a week in this area taking spanish classes a few years ago and it is a beautiful place. It is close enough to the city/airport to be able to see the sites but far enough out so that you feel like you are in natural Costa Rica and not just a big city. Hardly a day went by when walking to class that I didn't see a rainbow or parrots flying overhead.
Easy access to buses into Heredia which is a fun little University town or on into San Jose.
