New Year's Eve - Rio or Buenos?
We are going to SA for the first time
in December. We will spend most of the time
in Patagonia, but will come back to Iguazu
and we have to pick a city for New Year's Eve.
We think Rio is nicer (judging by the layout
and the pictures), Buenos just looks like
a poor version of Paris or Rome...
But I heard Rio was more dangerous...
Can you help us with some of your
experience?

Not just a poor version of Paris or Rome, but a more affordable one!. And with it's own flavour.
Anyway, the place to spend NYE depends on what you like, and whether you'll stay just 1 day in the city or more.
For scenery/landscape: Rio
Beaches: Rio
NYE fireworks etc: Rio
Cultural life: Both BUT more Buenos Aires
Heat: Both (and I'm talking about weather AND about people).
Architecture: Buenos Aires
Safety: Buenos Aires
Steak and wine: Buenos Aires

Oops, wrong button...I was saying:
Partying: BOTH
So, if it's just for NYE (just that day/night), I'd say RIO. If you are thinking of a longer visit, then you should consider what are you interested in, as they are 2 very different cities.

If you think BA is a "poor" version of Paris or Rome you should go to Rio.
BA is differnet and it is not like Paris or Rome.
That like saying Paris is a poor version of Rome. Rome is different from Paris and you should go for the differnce.
