rdufberg,

In Montezuma, there is less to do in terms of activities, although the falls are nice, and hiking Cabo Blanco Reserve fun as well. Montezuma is just smaller and more laid back. Malpais is a terrific place to hang out on the beach--but it's about 45 min. from Montezuma. Very relaxing place, but not much happening at night. Good surfing.

Manuel Antonio is the place to go if you don't mind LOTS of hotels, restaurants, and people. The hotels are NOT on the beach, but up and overlooking the beaches. Activities abound here, and it is a GREAT place to see animals in the park-- but do be careful since you will be alone. Where there are more tourists, there are more bad guys! See post "Living and Working in Costa Rica".

rdufbery,
No one is warning you that Manuel Antonio is dangerous. Only "don't walk on the beach along at night"--you shouldn't do that anywhere!

manuel antonio is safer than almpost any american beach town of the same size.
but, at night on the beach you get the rats out!
and the woman who was gang raped was walking with a local, not much you can do against 5 guys!
so don't walk on the beach at night, alone or accompanied.
