Mexico or Bust...
Hi All,
First time to Mexico - choice between Cancun, Acapulco & Puerto Vallarta. Only my hubby & I going - like the heat but not the water. Interested in culture but enjoy kicking back and swigging on a cool one. Any ideas or suggestions??

Hello CanadianBunny! Where are you coming from? We are from Oakville/Toronto area and if you need a great travel agent we currently have one working for us!!!
Anyhow, my suggestion for what you are looking for is Peurto Vallarta. Cancun and Aculpulco are built up tourists cities. In my opinion there isn't much there unless you really "get away". Of course the option in Cancun is to drive down the coast a bit and stay in the Mayan Riviera where the hotels aren't 20 stories high and it is a bit quieter.
PV has a wonderful city, with cobblestone roads and wonderful authentic restaurants. The beaches aren't great and my Fiance loves the beach so I haven't been back in 7 years so I'm sure things have changed, however the other times I've been there I have always been amazed at how they have balanced tourism and the old city feel. In PV you also have the option of staying at many different AI hotels, or staying in a little family run hotel in the old city, where you can walk everywhere. Taxies are not expensive either though.
Hope that helps a bit.

I've been leaning towards P.V. also. I do like beaches just not any water activities - we went to the Dominican last year and maybe spent one hour laying on the beach. We're coming from Grande Prairie, Alberta. Thanks for all the advice!!

CdnBunny, I am from Winnipeg and planning to go to PV and I am not a beach bunny either. I have done some research. Not many all-inclusives are in town and if you want more than beach, you might want avoid Nuevo Vallarta or the hotel zone in favour if Vieja Vallarta. Also there are lots of good restaurants in town so you may not need the hotel meals.
The main Cdn package vacation (Signature, Sunquest) companies do direct flights and you can get air-only packages from most Cdn cities for around $700. I am sure there are some from Edmonton.
Also, if you like culture, Guadalajara is a 4-hr bus trip from PV.

Puerto Vallarta is a simply beautiful town with plenty to do besides swim in the ocean! I love the palapa beach bars where you can sit in a lounge in the shade for the price of buying lunch or drinks (on the local beach of Playa Los Muertos). But also...
As mentioned by Scott, it manages to keep a nice balance of a thriving tourist industry, but normal local Mexican families going about their lives. The El Centro (downtown) is authentic, charming, and welcoming. The people I've met (15 trips later) always friendly and honest.
Cancun was built by the government for tourism. The sea on the Caribbean side has that turquoise color, but no culture to speak of.
