I'm with the "too hot" folks for Mexico, at least the Cancun area. Was there a couple of years ago and although I'm from the South, I had never experienced such unrelenting heat. Even the pool and ocean water weren't very refreshing because they were warm, too. I'd pick another area of that time of year -- between the oppressive heat and hurricane threats, there are better options.

Being total gluttons for punishment, we have changed our plans completely and will be reveling in the cool, crisp air of Washington, DC instead. Yep, DC in August.

IN the city in August?
I'd prefer the beach. You wear less clothing and you can jump in the water.
But, actually you are gambling and could win. East coast cities can be stifling that time of year, but it's not unusual to get a cool spell. Have a great trip!

Does anyone want to opine on the wisdom of visiting any or all of the following in August:
Mexico City
Oaxaca
Colonial cities (SMA, Guanajuato, Zacatecas, etc.)

Very wise indeed, at least for Mexico City and north. We visited MC, Cuernavaca, Queretaro and Guanajuato in August two years ago. Weather was about perfect. We were caught in one rainstorm in MC, and it rained slightly one evening in Guanajuato. Otherwise we had blue skies and temps in the high 70s and low 80's.

Our only time in Oaxaca was during February, and it was warm enough to swim then. Can't say what it might be like in August.

Oh wait, my handy Lonely Planet says it's cooler in August than February in Oaxaca.

The only time I have vacationed in the area south of Cancun has been in August and we have been 3 times. Yes, it is hot and humid, but just get a place with AC on the beach and you will be fine. The heat and humidity didn't really bother me or my two teenagers much, but it did get to my husband a few times. We visited Coba and Chitzen Itza which are inland and it was hot and we also got rained on, but those are such facinating and fun places you just don't notice the heat. The whole Riviera Maya area is such a fun place with so many things to do, I highly recommend visiting there any time of the year.
