I don't know anything about the hotel colonial but from the sound of the name I would assume that it is in the center. Since your flight will be arriving at night and the city is 20-30 minutes away I would look for a hotel that will pick you up. I'm sorry but I don't have any suggestions for a hotel, we always stay with family when we go down there. Maybe Sol Veracruzano will have a suggestion for you!

How adventurous are you?, do you eat spicy food?
I wouldn't recommend driving from Puebla to Mexico City. It's cheaper (toll booth wise) and less stressful to go by bus and leave the rental in Puebla.

Is your husband game for regional cooking?
Hotel Colonial's a good Hotel in Puebla's Historical center. Near most landmarks, museums and Nightlife hot spots.
There are many authorized taxi's in Huejotzingo Airport as well as in Puebla's Bus station (CAPU)(They're yellow), so it really doesn't matter what time you arrive.
Tlachichuca is a bus ride away, you just go to CAPU and ask for daily runs. By the way Tlachichuca (a small town with a very strange mineral lake ) is well know for its UFO sitings.

Yes, the guys are definitely game for good, local foods. The only real requirements are that the place be clean enough that they don't end up sick while they are climbing, lol! Thanks also for the bus/taxi/ufo information.

Fonda de Santa Clara , Regional Cuisine with moderate prices I highly recommend :
Entrees:
- Chalupas: fried corn tortillas with a topping of red or green sauce sliced onions and pork meat a true Puebla dish!
-Mixed tostadas: Deep fried corn tortilla topped with chicken, Tinga or Pickled pigs feet.
- Tortilla Soup
- Inditos Vestidos : Breaded Nopal cactus in a red soup.
Main Dishes:
-Mixiotes: Lamb shank marinated in a red sauce.
- Mole: Spicy Chocolate sauce covered chicken.
- Tinga: Chicken in a sweet and spicy sauce done with sweet Chipotle chile (mild heat)
Desserts
-Platanos Machos: Deep fried thick banana, toppedvwith a light sweet cream sauce.
-Dulces Tipicos: Regional sweets, from cookies to sugared fruit.
Taqueria La Oriental
Pork gyro style, you can eat them by taco, in a pita bread, as a torta (sandwich).

Hotel Colonial’s own restaurant is a good option too.
Near the Hotel is “Los Sapos”, with typical bars a great place to unwind.
“La Pasita” bar/saloon is a must see. They prepare specialty drinks , made from local ingredients, famous being “La Pasita” a shot made of raisin liquor, with a cube of goat cheese “to soften the kick”.
“La Cantina de los Remedios” and “Mi Ciudad” is just a taxi ride away, on famous Juarez street, both are great typical Poblano Restaurant/Bars. Food is great.
Now….. of the beaten path and in the southern part of Puebla city: 11 sur and Ave. Las Margaritas is my favorite Mexican restaurant “Casa Linaloe” its cuisine is a mix of Guerrero and Puebla style cuisine, clean and homely, no Pretentiousness.
Everything is great, clean and deliciously spicy.
From typical Enchiladas and Chalupas to their piece of resistance “Pozole” made in 3 different sauces and two options of meat.
All entrees are great I recommend “Tacos de Lomito Adobado” Pork strips in a chili base marinade and a tostada de pollo.
Totally delicious… argghh I feel hungry!

We enjoys spicy food and read you posts on 3 restaurants you recommended in Puebla in a later post. We're adventurous independent travellers and have to drive to MC airport in order to return rental car. I estimate driving time to be about 2 hours.

Sol--Thanks so much! The guys are very appreciative of all the help and are looking forward to some good food. Do you have any idea how early the first bus runs, for heading to tlachichuca?

I tried that site, but have a question. On the left side it asks for where you are coming from and where you are going to. I put in coming from Puebla but did not see as a destination option the town of tlachichuca. Does that town have another name or am I just missing something?
