I would like any information about transportation between Mexico City and Puebla. Thinking about the first class buses. Any idea on where we can check out their schedules, fares, etc. Is there a better way to go? Any info would be great, thanks!

It's been years but the buses are top notch, they run continuously day and night, the fares are very low, and anyone and everyone can tell you where the correct station (with multiple lines) are located.

There are buses that run constantly. You can pick one up at the bus station or at the airport. The airport bus costs alot more.

I made this trip a couple of years ago. We took a first class bus which was very nice and I seem to recall that the trip took a couple of hours. It seems there were only one or two of them a day. It was difficult for us to book our bus trips while in the US because we don't speak fluent Spanish and it was confusing. But once you're there they are very accomodating to gringos.

We stayed at a nice resort there, seems it was a Club Med, but very reasonable and not very Club Med-ish (actually its the only one I've ever stayed in so I really dont' know but there was nothing hedonistic going on and my son and another young boy hit it off so there are families there). I was doing some research at the University there but we also went to the cathedral with the underground tunnels and we went into town to the market.

Perhaps someone else has had more luck with finding bus schedules on the internet.

TandooriGirl--We are trying to get the schedule so we can book flights. The guys are headed there for a climb and so don't want to be hanging around too long between when their flight arrives and catching the bus. They want to get where they are going, lol! Anything you can remember would be great! BTW, I am also on the US board most of the time, so you can post to me there too.

Arriving at Mexico City's airport you just ask the baggage handlers to the "Estrella Roja to Puebla" (there is a bus station inside the Airport, so you don't have to go anywhere).

Runs are every 30 minutes,Cost is 115 pesos (10 dlls) 1W, you can arrive at two different bus stations: 4 Poniente or CAPU <--- this really depends on where you go from there. The trip lasts 1.5 to 2 hrs.

I live in Puebla.

Thank you!!! This is for my dh and his friends. They are headed for a climb...pico de orizaba. DH asked me to help with the logistics, so I may have many more questions, lol!

Then I would recommed your husband and friends asking for CAPU bus station.

Are they planning to go by bus to Perote (nearest town to Pico de Orizaba) or rent a car?

I've taken the airport bus before. You don't need reservations. Just ask the porter to take you there. When we went you walked out to the bus and paid the driver directly.

There's more security so, you pay at a booth.

You may be videotaped. (they do it for security reasons, last year there were some highway robberies).

If they're staying in Perote I can recommend a great restaurant with clean and delicious regional food.

I will ask my dh tonight about the other specifics, but yes, any suggestions would be great! The highway robberies...is that on the buses or in private vehicles? They will be flying in and meeting their other climbing partners at the airport and then all heading out together.

You can also take the direct flight on Continental from Houston.

Thank you for the flight info too! We didn't realize that would be an option. Two of the guys are flying in from Seattle and the others from the east coast.

I will do a google search for those schedules.

I am sure my dh will be impressed with all the good advice.

BTW Mikemo--he is a retired Naval Officer...so you are helping out a comrad

I agree with Mikemo that there are more options than Estrella Roja, (I personally prefer ADO) but that would imply your Husband and friends would have to take a cab ride to central del sur and buy tickets there.

That could be a plus going directly to the city they will be staying at, but wouldn't get to visit Puebla.

My question is: What would be home base for them: Cd. Serdan or Orizaba? Maybe going to Puebla (city) isn’t the best option, taking in consideration they would have to treck daily to and fro...

Regarding the Robberies , there were 2 isolated incidents in May , it seems lax security allowed two armed people on the bus and held it for 15 minutes, taking valuables and escaping in a waiting car.

As the head of Nuclear Medicine @ Balboa NH (NRMC San Diego), I was working the equivalent of just under $2 Mil. (in 1978 private practice billings) when I resigned from the USN and went into the private sector.
I really had the best job in the Navy, but it would not pay private school tuition and allow me to buy a new car once a decade.

Mikemo--Yes, you definitely do not get rich being in the military, lol! DH was a Submarine Officer, and is now an engineer. We loved living all over and traveling a lot. His retirement was less than a year ago so this civilian lifestyle is new to us. It is good, but very different.

How long should it take by car to the Intl airport in MC?

Talked to dh...he said the latest is they all are going to fly into Puebla. Then they need to get to tlachichuca (sp?).

They are planning on staying at Hotel Colonial in Puebla, but have not made reservations yet. Is this a good place or is there something that would be better. They basically need something clean just for the night. Also, he said he definitely would welcome the restaurant recommendation in Puebla.

On transportation once again...what is the best way to get from Puebla to tlachichuca?
