Mexico City

On a 10 day trip flying into Mex City, how much time would you spend in Mexico City? Most of my trip is revolving around Morelia and Patzcuaro. I was going to end in Mexico City for 1-2 days, but then I thought it might undo the mellow I hope to get by meandering and relaxing. Any thoughts?

I usually spend time at the beginning rather than the end of a trip in Mexico City. There is so much to see and do there, and then you can go relax in the less hectic environs of Morelia and Patzcuaro. I usually stay 2-3 nights in Mexico City. We are planning this same trip later in the year!

We just returned from a great week in Mexico City!!! We spent 7 nights there, explored the capital 4 of the days, 1 day we took a bus to Teotihuacan to see the Pyramids, another day we took the Metro and explored the really neat town of Coyoacan and also swung thru San Angel on the way back to the city and on our last day we took a bus to Puebla for the day. We wish that we could have spent at least one night in Puebla...it is such a nice town with lots to see!

As for how much time you should spend in Mexico City...I would recommend at least 3 days. If you're very ambitious you will be able to see quite a bit, but of course you could spend MUCH more time there. It is an amazing place!! There are soooo many people!!! It is busy, bustling and oh, so wonderful...but it is not "relaxing". However, there are lots of nice parks where you can find some peace and quiet.

I would also recommend the capital city for the beginning of your trip.
If you enjoy exploring big cities I encourage you to spend at least a few days there. We just loved it!

Marilyn1 – Thank you– your message let me know I was on the right track! Globetrot – I had been looking at Puebla, but needed to narrow down my day trips. Now I know I'll have plenty to see in Mexico City, and I will have to return for the rest!

Did anyone get vaccinations?

We didn't get any shots. I don't think they're really necessary for Mexico.
We didn't get them when we went to Costa Rica or Argentina either. For what that's worth.

luv2globetrot - Whew! I had pretty much decided to forego them, so thanks for the speedy feedback.

HOw long did it take you/ anyone to get from the airport to Mexico City? I am considering staying at an airport hotel on my very last night to avoid the 5 hour bus ride in from Morelia and environs. I have read anything from 30 min to 1 1/2 hours.

Time required for getting to the airport will depend on whether or nut there is rush hour traffic, but I've never allowed more than an hour. What really takes time is that they hand-search ALL luggage you are checking. I would not advise staying at the airport--the hotels are less than nice there. Consider coordinating bus arrival with a later flight, or maybe departing from Morelia. But if you decide to return to Mexico City and stay over prior to departure, staying at the airport is not worth it IMHO.

Marilyn1 I agree with you, but my flight out of MEx is at 12:30, so I am not sure how I would get there from Morelia by say 10:30 a.m. I am not really finding clear info on the bus schedules, and I think Morelia is abt 5 hours from the airport. I didn't realize the hotel airports would not be somewhere I'd want to stay (like a US standard chain we would find at the airport here).

Well, I just think it would not be the best ending for your trip, especially if you arrived early in the day. You probably DO need to spend the last night in Mexico City with such an early flight.

Marilyn1 - thanks for your help. I booked at a modest hotel online that will be 30 min to an hour from the airport.

About hotels in Mexico City, and getting to the airport from one: from most center-city hotels the trip is unlikely to be more than 20-30 minutes - except in very extreme and unusual conditions. The airport in locate inside the city, close to the city-center.

About being in the airport in advance: getting there less than 2 hours prior to your flight is a foolish thing to do. Earlier, rather than later - is best - from what I experience there.

About time to spend in the city: I think two days wouldn't put a damper on the trip. I find Mexico City far more interesting than Patzcuaro - though I enjoy Morelia (but a couple of days there can be too long for many people).

Well different people Different interests. I could spend a month in Patzcuaro/Morelia area with no problem in fact will be spending Easter week there.
