Mexico beach resort 400 miles from Phoenix??
Please don't laugh! On a recent trip, we had a conversation with a woman just raving about a resort she goes to in Mexico. She said they fly into Phoenix and drive about 400 miles from there. We've been looking at maps and trying to remember the name of the town. Can anyone help? Thanks - CJ

Could be Rocky Point, but it's closer than 400 miles as it takes only 4 hours to drive it from PHX ... it's at the top of the Sea of Cortez, due south of Lukeville and Organ Pipe National Monument.

You're probably right Stewbear, it's likely San Carlos or Guaymas ... seems strange to fly to Phoenix and then drive there though since it's difficult to find a rental car company that allows their cars into Mexico and since you can fly directly to Guaymas ... I think there's a flight that goes to La Paz and then Guaymas, for example.

well, what's this Guayamos like?
Mostly a fishing and shrimping center. Nearby San Carlos is newer and built up for tourism. I think SC had a Club Med for a while but had to change the name to Club Fred because the cool people wouldn't come here. (OK, I'm making up the part about Club Fred )
OK for diving and fishing but there's little here that you can't find on the Baja side of the Sea of Cortez, which is why it isn't as popular.
Most people from Phoenix who drive to a Mexican beach would go to Rocky Point (Puerto Penasco) because it's much closer. Guaymas and San Carlos are actually further from Phoenix than San Diego and you won't be driving I-8 quality roads to get there.
