Merida in August: how likely is bad weather?
27 year old male originally planning to visit Merida Mexico in February of 2024. I now have the option to actually go in August of this year and I’m considering it. The only thing that gives me pause is the fact that August is in the middle of Merida’s hurricane season & seems to be extremely hot as well. I can’t swim so I won’t be visiting any cenotes to cool down. I really want to see the Chichen Itza, Valladolid, Izamal and take some historical tours of Merida. What are the chances of Merida being unbearably hot or even having a hurricane in August?

While no one can accurately predict a hurricane or tropical storm a month or so in advance, you can for sure count on hot, humid & rainy. A quick glance at August on Weatherspark offers up adjectives such as sweltering & oppressive. Not a time I'd plan a trip to anywhere in the Yucatan. The upside is August is the low season for tourists, so fewer crowds and likely lower prices.

We went to Merida in August to visit a friend and while we loved it, it was extremely hot and humid. I have never sweated so much in my life. It is brutal. I think I would opt for February if I were you.
We visited Chichen Itza, Izamal, and Celestun, as well as exploring the downtown area. It's a great place.

I was in Quintana Roo state which is next to Yucatan in mid-August 2 years ago and we had a tropical storm. But it wasn't really bad. Rained a lot for a few days then all was fine. It's hit or miss. Also, Merida is generally about 10 degrees Celsius hotter than the coast, it get's REALLY hot there during the summer.

While August wouldn't be my first choice, I'd do it again if that was the only time I could go or there was a particular reason to go at that time. It was super hot and humid but we survived, as did the 800,000 residents of Merida. But, yeah, expect to be drenched within 5 minutes anytime you are without A/C.

Disclaimer - have never been to that region. Have vacationed coastal Mexico (Puerto Vallarta mostly, Baja couple times) and would not go myself in August. Not only because of the heat, bugs and rain also increase as summer goes on in PV.
