mayan coast - small, low keyed but pretty resort?

I am looking for a small, perhaps rustic resort near Playa del Carmen - not interested in the mega hotels/all inclusives. Any of these left? Any suggestions? Thanks!

Have you thought about Tulum? It' s 45 minutes south of Playa del Carmen but a world away in terms of it's rustic beauty. There are many lovely rustic resorts that consist of thatched-roof cabanas. We stayed in Azulik and Cabanas Copal - they are sister properties - last year. It was quiet, the beaches are gorgeous, and the restaurant on the property was great. I know there are many more near there as well. Good luck!

Al Cielo is south of PDC about 20 minutes in Xpu-Ha. It's only 4 rooms.

Copal is a dump full of swingers and thieves. Check out www.tripadvisor.com for dozens and dozens of reports about people having their things stolen, topless women being harassed, false charges being placed on tabs, etc. I've heard that the owners are in real trouble with the policia and may be forced to close.

Look elsewhere. Copal is a dangerous shithole.
