Maroma Resot & Spa - worth it?
HELP!!! Thinking of a trip to Maroma Resort & Spa this Spring. Read a lot of -ve report on Trip Advisor, very few positive and some reports on Fodors. Is this place worth it? Havent seen any reports from Fodorites in 2004. Any tips would help.
If not Maroma, any other recommendations for a 4 day trip - looking for a quiet relaxing vacation by the water (ocean or pool) if possible??

The location is fantastic, looks like the rooms are nice, but probably overpriced for what you get.
I think that if they charged $100 a night less, people would be much happier, but at those prices, people have very high expectations, and rightly so.

From the web-site and pictures, it seems like they do offer what we are looking for. But I read reports of bad rooms, stink on the beach and a very noisy club next door. Wanted to find out if all of that is true. I do think this place is pricey and I expect to get my money's worth. Was hoping for some experiences that people may have had with Maroma.
Thanks for the input though!

We were there in December - we thought it was PARADISE! The service is fantastic, the beach is unbelievable and the peace you get is worth any price. It is expensive, but it was more than twice as nice as hotels for $200/night. The rooms are not like hotels, they are so private and although the place was booked, we felt like we were there alone. The place next door is crowded, but Maroma's beach is so big you don't have to be anywhere near that part of the beach. We didn't even notice it until we took a walk down that way. It is definately a great place IF you want quiet. It is not a good place if you aren't going to just sit on the beach. They can arrange activities, but the resort itself is pure relaxation. 4 days would be perfect if you are looking to unwind. We were there 7 and took a few excursions to swim with dolphins and to Chichen-Itza. I would go back in a second. Not to mention, it was a VERY romantic place. Good luck!

Hi vids,
Have been to Maroma two times--last Feb a year ago and last summer(Aug I think). We really like it there--my husband really LOVES it. It may be his favorite place. The beach is great, the service wonderful and the food was good (breakfast is our favorite). We, too, read those negative reports and wonder about them. I guess you can have a bad experience anywhere. Anyway, we leave this Thursday for another trip there. Yes, it is expensive and we notice they have new spa facilities. We have been very pleased with previous spa treatments. My favorite is hot stone. I will try to report when we return from this trip. Happy travels.

Hi vids,
Just returned last night from Maroma. The beach here is wonderful. It was a little windy but the weather was good. Should be better in April. Their new spa facilities were great. One thing I want to tell you is that the food service person (who I thought was good) is gone and they are getting someone else. We could tell there was not someone "in charge" as there should be. However, the manager Felipe is well aware of all of this and is working on it. In spite of all of this the food was still very good. If you want a relaxing and beautiful place Maroma is it. This is not a large resort and you feel more secluded.
While we were there we met some friends for the day who were staying at Secrets just done the road. It is a very beautiful all inclusive resort. They were very pleased with it. However, the beach is not great there. There are evidently rocks there and the water is not as pretty and the swimming not good. They did say you could walk down the beach aways and find a good place to get in the water though. The pools seem good.
Hope this helps. Happy travels.

hmmm, might have to look back at Maroma someday again! I got so bummed out by all the -ve comments on trip advisor that my DH and I ended up going to Dominican Republic (Puerto Plata) - we stayed at an all inclusive resort called Coral Marien! And it was really good! Will post details on another thread. Thanks for feedback on Maroma, will take it up sometime soon!

I do not put much confidence in trip advisor trip reports. They all seem very negative. I just returned from a wonderful vacation in which got mostly negative reviews on trip advisor. It was like I was in a different resort than what I read about as not 1 thing was true! This is n ot the first time that I have experienced this...TA posts are just not correct. When ever I have gone to a new destination, I cna tell you that the reports from Fodors have been right on and extremely accurate.
I just cancelled my November trip to Peter Island and changed it to Maroma...it looks perfect for us.
Needless to say I read trip advisor for entertainment value....it's like the national enquirer of the travel boards.

I was one of the negative posters about Maroma on TA. Looking back now 6 months, I wouldn't change any of the posting. I am not out to get the place, but I did feel exactly as someone above said- for the kind of money we spent- our package was $4500 for 5 nights before we bid on it on luxurylink.com- it was not any kind of value, which left us with a sort of so-so feeling when we left. We expected a lot more, and yes, my posting there is true- we got ripped off when we were sold 'house wine' after I had ordered something else- house wine turned out to be $150+ a bottle. Should I have asked how much it was? Sure, I guess, looking back, but no other wine on the menu was that $$ so it does seem like a sketchy move on their part. And they know many people are not going to ask how much something is and that we wouldnt see the bill until we were leaving.
So, I am not part of the 'national enquirer,' looking for a reason to gossip, my facts are there. It is a beautiful place and was quite unique in many ways, but the value was not there for us and I think we may have been better off somewhere else. These are just my opinions, and my husband's as well.

I always use trip advisor, and have found it to be right on the money. I wouldn't plan a trip without it.
You might want to check out Royal Hideaway. They get overwhelmingly +ve reports.
If you thinnk all the reports on TA are -ve maybe you're looking at the wrong places. I don't know if anything is more valuable than real people who have been there.

The ocean there is breathtaking. I certainly thought it was worth it, but if you want to save cash and just GET there, then I wouldn't worry about it. The garden views are very close to the beach. You just can't see the beach. We stayed in an Ocean Front Villa. It was room 40. It was heavenly!

Rooms 28 and 29 have partial ocean views. I have been happy with them. However, they are not really large. One other thing, the beach is so close that you can just go out and sit there is you like. If you don't care what you pay go for the ocean view.
