Maroma - How does it Compare

The Diva is planning her next excursion and Maroma is on her radar. Her favorite Caribbean spots thus far have been Parrot Cay, Cap Juluca, and Eden Rock/IDF. Diva did not really care for PSV or Kamalame Cay. Peter Island was somewhere in the middle of the pack.

Diva likes a lot of privacy -- long soft beaches to walk on and water that is calm enough to swim. Also -- Diva prefers a place where her European tendencies on the beach will not be frowned upon. As a result -- Diva only wants an "adult" place where kids generally do not frequent. A honeymoon/sexy vibe is always a positive in Diva's world. A good workout/fitness room, spa and a nice bar will top off the perfect spot.

Diva has seen some recent posts from travelers who have been to similar places and would very much like some more insites/perspectives.

Thanks.

i have not enjoyed the pleasures of maroma, but think this site may be of some help to the diva. http://www.locogringo.com/playa/maro...aroma%20Resort
towards the bottom of the page is a photo of 2 parrots. next to it is a small airplane to click on for an aerial view of the maroma beach. if you hit the double arrows at the top of that page it shows you more of the beach in either direction.
maroma has been much discussed here recently - in particular a new section of rooms they have opened so try the search bar too.

Hi Diva,
I cannot compare Maroma to the other places you have been, but I have been to Maroma. Going again end of August for about the 5th time. (can't remember how many times exactly). Maroma is my husband's favorite beach resort. I believe the locogringo website is very accurate. It is quite private and the only children I have ever seen there were eating in the restaurant - never saw any on the beach. A major factor for us in going so much here is that it is great resort with an excellent spa and the flight for us is quite short. Cap Juluca has been on our list but we cannot see going there when we are so happy thus far with Maroma. Happy travels.

Is "the diva" (perhaps aka tinibikini) still interested in information on Maroma?
We're just back.

Welch - the Diva is quite interested to hear about Maroma -- particularly how it may compare to the feel and experience of St. Barths.

I want to hear about Maroma too and how it compares to other places as I've also been to Peter Island and PSV. It's on the short list along with Jumby Bay, Hermitage Bay, Palm Island and Cap Juluca.

Hi all:
First the good news. We had wonderful weather and it can be so "iffy" at this time of the year.
We began our trip with one night in Cabo at the Palmilla (long story), a gorgeous resort, but the weather was strange and the resort was full of groups. So, after one night, off to Maroma.
Because of the odd routing- Cabo/Mexico City/Cancun- we arrived late and well after dark. Definitely the last people there that night.
The road into the resort is miserable- pot hole filled and jungle like, but not in a particularly attractive and "fun" way. Even once at the resort, a good 10-15 minutes off the road, it was almost impossible to figure out how to find the lobby in the dark.
We were quickly taken to a room that was the least impressive I've seen in many years. Amusingly it was called "el camaron" (the shrimp). The key didn't work in the lock without a good 3 or 4 minutes of fiddling. It hardly seemed worth the bother!
To say the room was small was an understatement. There was no seating other than the bed- and no room for it.
After a very rushed (and expensive) meal we went to sleep only to be awakened at the (very) crack of dawn by the sunrise coming through the twigs "atmospherically" covering the small window next to the bed. No further blackout is available.
We spent all of the next day attempting to rectify the situation. Everyone was "in a meeting", "very concerned", "will do something right away" ad nauseum.
So we spent the next night in the shrimp.
To add to this the beach service was nonexistent. After 3 full hours of trying to flag some one down (more-"yes, yes we'll be right there&quot we finally got a hold of the beach manager and had no problems until two days further down the line.
We were finally offered a change of rooms after two nights. At this point we almost went home. I hate throwing good money after bad and Maroma is not inexpensive. All our time was spent trying to track down ANYONE who could help!
We were offered the choice of two rooms- one small but brighter (the shrimp was so dark, lights had to be on at all times) over the restaurant where, with the balcony doors open the lull of the air-conditioning units for the whole building competed quite successfully with the surf and the other at the far (and I do mean far) end of the property, larger, far from private, what I'd call more a "partial ocean view" than ocean right next to the wild and crazy Italian resort next door.
Are you interested in my going on?

I neglected to mention that the "shrimp room", in addition to everything else, backed onto a housekeeping room that appeared to be used at all hours. We'd hear banging and chatting. The tiny patio we had, with only a little built in cement "sofa"for seating, was frequently used as a stopping off point, so we weren't paying as much attention as we should have been to room number 2!
The back wall of our second room formed the property line with the AI next door.
Our first real indication that this might be a problem was when the speakers on the beach were turned up to maximum volume and the building vibrated along with the happy folks next door!
This seemed to only happen late (not super late- 9- 10 PMish) or early (7-10 AM)in the day. The rest of the time it was relatively quiet and not too problematic, if you didn't mind the small children (Maroma doesn't allow children under 16 but the resort next door has no such policy).
I'd pretty much had it by the time I had been awakened by the "call to arms" next door. Once again we were on the Maroma "merry-go-round" with promise after promise to "see what could be done" and "we'll get back to you".
We finally gave up and came home. It just wasn't worth another promised move, when ever to who knows what.
Perhaps not another guest cared or was bother by these things but the way they were handled in our case was completely unacceptable.
A few more points:
At the rates Maroma charges there are other things that just should be included such as complimentary water on the beach- forget niceties such as cool face towels, Evian spritzes or popsicles.
We found the waiters and food service to be very pleasant, the quality of the food middling, at best.
Upkeep of the property was fine.
There were a few people who worked at the resort who really cared and wanted things done right, others not so much.
One day there were no umbrellas to be had on the beach. I asked if there were any available that hadn't been put out and was told "no". My husband was furious. The place wasn't that crowded. He went to a manager and an umbrella miraculously appeared. Things kind of went like that.
At no time were we ever disrespectful or did we raise our voices to anyone. We were always polite and asked nicely for everything (too much so,evidently or perhaps we would have had "livable accommodations!&quot.
I'm happy to answer questions.

Oh my goodness. I've always thought Maroma sounded like heaven...now I'm not so sure I'd want to go there. Thanks, welch.

Thanks Welch,
I love to hear ups and downs. People were amazed that we loved the caves after our complaints, but they really went out of there way to make things right...so we want to return soon. I'm sorry to hear that there were so many empty promises...that's the worst! When you are paying $700 plus a night depending on room and time of year there are certain expectations. Can I ask if you would return to O and O Palmilla? We have been to the O and O Ocean Club. It was vey nice but I prefer other resorts...although Palmilla is also on my list. Where else have you been that has been worth it? Thanks for sharing.

I would absolutely return to Palmilla.
It's a beautiful property. The rooms are the nicest I've seen for such a resort and the level of service is generally high. If you travel in the late summer the weather is generally hot and sunny.
The resort has a small swimable beach.
We found the water in the Yucatan to be very dirty- full of detritus. There wasn't a day pieces of plastic or whatever didn't wrap themselves around our legs. This has never been the case in Cabo. The water was also not nearly as clear in the Yucatan, while we were there, as it has been in Cabo.
Certainly not what I would have expected!

very sorry to hear your experience with the ocean water at Maroma. I remember my first trip to Cancun years ago, and I was just bowled over by the clarity and beauty of the water, never experienced anything like it before...

The color of the water was pretty but the clarity nonexistant. The water was a little choppy, but not enough to account for this.
I was born in the Bahamas which has some of the most beautiful water in the world- and against which I compare most everything. This didn't hold a candle.

Oh my god...are you kidding?

Wow.

Maroma was the nicest place we have been since Las Ventanas in Cabo.

It was exquisite. I highly recommend a trip to Maroma. Highly.

Excellent in every way.

We went to Maroma last month for 8-nights and had a wonderful experience. We had the lowest level of accomodation (Garden Room) and didn't have any size or noise issues. The room was actually very nice.

Beach service was friendly, if a bit leisurely. No problem getting umbrellas at the beach, or getting anything else we asked for.

Our experience was pretty much the complete opposite of Welch's.

The ocean front suites are the best for privacy. Ask for one on the 2nd floor because nobody will be able to see you from the beach. If you have the ground floor, then people will walk by your patio to get to the beach.
