Thanks, Shillmac, volcano girl and annesherod!

Annesherod,

It would be fun to meet for a coffee or tropical drink....I wonder how we can meet?

Our flight arrives around 5:20 am on Saturday morning the 22nd and we will probably get to the hotel by 7:30 am or 8:00....are you arriving that day?

shillmac and anyone else who has been to CR. I FORGOT TO ASK...

Can we pay our departure tax when we arrive....we are starting to get nervous as people are talking about departure times and not having plenty of time because of crowds and security........

You can pay it when you arrive, sure, but most people just pay it when thet depart. If you get to the airport in plenty of time it won't be a problem, I think the most I've waited is 10 minutes.

We always just pay it when we leave and haven't encountered long lines.

Just one more thought........Our flight leaves at 9:25 from San Jose and we will be coming from the los suenos marriott (central pacific).....should we leave our hotel by 5:00 am??? This is spring break and it's a busy time. I appreciate any input.

We always try to get to the airport 3 hours before the flight; so far, we haven't need the extra time, but it's unpredictable, so better safe than sorry I think. Bring a good book just in case.

While we were awaiting customs upon arrival in Costa Rica: SJO airport, we paid the departure tax at a booth;hubby stayed in line with the kids while I ducked out of line and paid the tax so we did not loose any time.(the kiosk gal was actually there)We kept the departure tax form dry using our most valued ziploc bags!!! Also, we brought cheapie-disposable plastic ponchos used only twice in December-Jan. Also brought smaller garbage bags and used them for all our wet clothing/shoes(from rain or mud) We hate biting bugs and hate putting on repellent altho we are used to oodles of mosquitoes in Canada. In Dec we did not bring nor use any bug repellent.(Arenal,Manuel Antonio and Osa for 2 weeks) No vacs.

We took our kids to Costa Rica and I asked the doc about what pesticide to use and extra imunizations. He said no to the extra immunizations and I can't remember what he said about bugs. We packed a comprehensive 1st aide kit as we weren't sure about getting bandaides. tylenol, sudafed,etc.. Turns out there are pharmacies in most towns. Although it helped that we speak Spanish. Our 3 year old ended up with a double ear infection and it was easier to get antibiotic in La Fortuna than in the US. Bring hydrocortizone cream and benedryle.

I'd do a combo of Poas and the La Paz Waterfall Gardens; they're close to each other.
